A few years back during GDC (I think) Patrick Klepek did a pretty great interview with an attorney who was voicing the same concerns.  Nobody seemed really interested in listening, unfortunately.  Eventually some politician is going to lock onto this stuff.

every country Ive lived has more affordable places if you commute

no one is forcing anyone to spend all their income on a shitty room in the heart of london or nyc

To be fair:

1) Valve doesn't make these third party sites
2) Third Parties are totally responsible for them
3) Valve's only "contribution" is allowing the API's to see the person that logs in via them's inventory.

Valve doesn't get a cut from these third parties. They only get a cut if the person is buying a key and/or crate from the game(s) they're "gambling" in. The actual items have no monetary value outside of the community. So, it's a bit more nuanced than this.

Legally they are very in the clear. It's up to the community to make the value of skins/weapons that they get from Valve's drops.

If the value was $0.00 and people were just "gambling" with no demand for it just for shits and giggles, would this really be a problem?

Valve gets no money from it outside of the keys and Marketplace selling. People gambling their inventory at third party sites have no value outside of the community value and there is no money changing hands. So legally, there's no "gambling" outside of virtual goods going on and that virtual goods has no money (as far as Valve is concerned, it's "trading between people")

I don't know what the TF2 introduction was, but it's clear Valve doesn't care about these third party sites basically make their games profitable by people opening crates hoping for high value items.

Color me unconvinced by how much the market is driven by what is mostly a captive audience in major cities, trying to access the most basic necessity. Consumers can't really stop living under a roof to sway the invisible hand. I mean most would gladly pay less, the only thing they're getting out of an high rent is a status symbol or most probably reassurances aboug the quality of the neighbourhood.
