Well I guess there's such a thing as training for proficiency with guns and coping with what you're doing. I agree though that it doesn't mean a lot at this point, especially in the USA where you can probably get that through a shooting course or in the army more easily than in some terrorist boot camp overseas ? Use of explosives would be more significant.

This is probably the best example of two shlumps being able to hold their own due to being comfortable with guns, while using raw firepower and body armor.

They didn't kill any cops, unlike what happened last night, but their motive was completely different. Homemade body armor and fully automatic rifles with large magazines were enough to completely overpower normal police (which should be expected). 

The wikipedia entry is incorrect about what happened to Larry Phillips, or is worded in a weird way. Police and investigators after that fact believe he was trying to clear, or unjam the handgun he dropped. He cleared it with the muzzle pointing at his face, making the jammed round hit him in the head. It wasn't a purposeful suicide.

The video of the cop getting shot shows a guy moving in a fairly tactical way, with movements to the left and right and keeping the gun steady and aimed.

This is "what the fuck it means" when somebody talks about it looks like they had some form of training. It could be they picked it up at some fantasy gun nerd camp, but my money is that somebody involved with this was former military.

Being a civilian with no police or military training is a great qualifier for being a shlump. All you can tell is that the shooter appears comfortable doing what he's doing. Controls the weapon, deliberate aiming/firing.

Uses cover and concealment. Other than that, not much else to say.

I'm not saying these people weren't ex anything, but the idea that people that played Halo and Uncharted trying to pinpoint tactical maneuvers via execution footage is corny at the very least.

I think the issue is that the whole "training" thing is treated as a lot more sinister and exceptional than it really is. It often reads like it is supposed to be evidence of something being involved in the background (terrorist organization of some flavor, usually).

Well...yeah. There often is. Sometimes that's evil bad brown people, sometimes it's hillbillies with a not-so-secret desire to rid 'Murica of anybody that can't get easily sunburnt, sometimes it's prior military training. Sometimes, it's just a nutter with too much access to guns. But many of these shooters have had some form of training. You know, when you got a bunch of hammers at your disposal, everything yadda yadda yadda.
