I swear, they want to turn the world into Cocteau's vision for the future (the Demolition Man dude, not the french writer). How did we get to this point?
Mostly they just want to impress like-minded people. As (insular) communities tend to do. The sky is not falling, don't worry. Just increment the bogeyman tally and move on.

If you want to blame something for thinking it's all going to hell, blame the internet. It not only produces a great variety of skewed perspectives (because it's a cherry picking utopia full of filter bubbles) but it's also the best mechanism to expose you to them. Constant and virtually endless. Not to mention all the exaggerated or made up nonsense which often circulates for much longer within groups (because the bogeyman is out there, don't you see!?).
Think of the "Florida man" phenomenon. Are Floridians just that crazy, or do
Florida's freedom of information laws just expose more stories ripe for the picking?
