No more struggles above this thread
« on: August 16, 2015, 06:08:36 PM »
Drawing the line here. There has to be more to this world worth discussing than your whine.

Even the GAF threads are less pathetic.

Think about that for a second.

Feel bad.

Now bottle it up, and wait until your next therapy meeting, which I'm sure you can afford because you're an adult, able person.

I've got no problem with people letting off steam. I agree that some people out there on the internet only ever post about negative shit and it's a total downer. Like someone on my Facebook, all she does is bitch. But on the opposite spectrum, it feels like the internet is becoming this blackhole of faux positivity where everything in life is happy, everything is carefree, and every day is an adventure as really, really fucked up shit is going all around us. It comes across as a species wide apathy, and it feels like social media - or rather, Facebook in particular - fuels it. My own cousin unfollowed me on Facebook because I post about "too many negative things." It's like people want a constant sense of validation and a care free hug box zone. That's not to say we should relish and thrive upon these bad feelings, but it's almost as if the collective millenial's main modus operandi now is to deter anything that may drudge up any "negative" feeling or thought or something that goes against the status quo. It is methodically craven in its pursuit of "peace" with as little conflict as possible without ever parlaying anything of substance.

Internet is the new Opium of the people.

Not that I intended this thread to be super REAL TALK. But as long as there's a healthy balance everyone can get along. Try to overwhelm the shared space with your personal, unrelatable problems... and we got problems.

Think of it like smoking— You're free to do it, but everyone is breathing the same air, so try to be considerate and self-aware.

People are too positive on the internet?  LOL

The internet is mostly a black hole of negativity.  It's shit that people would never get away with saying to anyone in public.  That's why they say it: to project their failures and shortcomings as people to those who can't or won't retaliate.  Most internet haters are people who had high hopes for themselves and are finding out that it ain't gonna happen for them; at best, they can be a cog in a giant corporate machine and at worst, they can't find gainful employment so they have to rely on the "gig economy".  I'm sorry that life hasn't turned out the way some people wanted it to be but that doesn't mean that I need to pay attention to people bitching about what some asshole I don't care about said on Twitter.

Plus, social media — and especially Facebook— is a completely different beast. You run a personal page that encourages you to share your thoughts ("What's on your mind?"), your photos, and your every moment. On Facebook, I personally add you as a friend because I'm interested on what you have to think or say, and whenever the interest is gone I can terminate the interaction very easily.

Whereas on public forums?

I find Twitter pretty realistic. Then again, I hitch my horse directly to things that affect me, and that's mostly in relation to race. Nothing you said corresponds to my reality of the Internet. It actually reinforces it: people who are in a good place and therefore deem all people who they see as "negative" as losers who obviously (even when this isn't the case) that they are failures and thus have a reason to bitch. A narrative of clandestine snootiness that doesn't find people's personal struggles as valuable.

I hope you're not conflating the struggles I'm referring to here with those impacting millions of lives, such as issues of race, discrimination, politics, and any other relevant current events. Those have always, and will always, have a right to exist.

If it's any consolation, Upworthy's bubble has bursted. Other sites quickly figured out their terrible reporting practices and copied it until people got pissed off and pushed back.

Some people (mostly white people, some other racial minorities) will flat out tell me to stop being negative or angry about race matters. It's filed under everything I'm talking about, because these people avoid these issues just as much as they avoid any other "negative" feeling. When I said they avoid bad feelings, they avoid ALL BAD FEELINGS and want everything and everyone to be a smily happy place town. The premise of your thread sounded eerily similar to "why are you so angry?!!?" topics regarding race.
