It's almost October, which means scary movies, which means we're going to watch scary movies even though Plug.DJ is probably going to be dead before October actually starts. BUT there are Plug.DJ alternatives and, if it comes down to it, we can just pair up Youtube with IRC chat, but we are DOING THIS.

Edit: This is probably what we'll use for watching movies [Youtube, Vimeo, and Daily Motion are all supported]:

We'll do what we can, but our selection is limited to what's on Youtube (unless we're just gonna sync discs or something). My personal plans are to work my way through some of the core slasher series (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street), Cronenberg Night (got Videodrome + Scanners Criterion BDs), annual The Omen rewatch, Goodnight Mommy, and Crimson Peak.

Some time this week, I'll scour the Youtubes and start putting together a playlist for The Bore. We probably won't start October 1st because Rumbler and I will be at the Rifftrax Live showing of Miami Connection, but Friday we'll do a movie.

My review from last year: :yeshrug

28. Hellraiser

Haven't really been able to pin down my thoughts on this one. I dislike it, that much I know, but it's hard for me to explain why that is.

I suppose principally it's because the most screen time is devoted to the "bad guys." Not the Cenobites (whether they're actually bad guys is up for interpretation, as they only do what they do after asking or are explicitly summoned.) I mean Julia and her skinless ex-lover Frank. Both of these people are repugnant - they kill without remorse, betray the trust of husband/brother Larry (before eventually killing him too), and 80% of the movie is focused on them. The "protagonist" is ostensibly the step-daughter/niece Kirsty, but she's barely a factor until the third act requires her.

The gore effects and makeup on the Cenobites are phenomenal, possibly some of the best I've seen in a horror film. However, it's all flash and no substance. There's no story or real characters here, just an excuse to take the world of BDSM and play with it in a supernatural way.

certainly not the greatest, especially from that era but I wouldn't call it shit. Second one is worse but is so visually striking that it still deserves a nod. Everything else after that is shit though yes.

In related news, I watched Hellraiser III tonight and it was even worse than I remembered. Pinhead is all like "Yeah I know these new Cenobites are bollocks, but I had to make them in a hurry. SHUT UP!" :lol I think this movie is probably worse than Bloodline, although I haven't seen Bloodline in a while either. I'll give it a watch later (not gonna rewatch the DTV sequels tho :yuck).

Night of the Demons was very good. Strong formula, executed well. An excellent choice to start with. Spookies had lots of neat monster designs (the costumes more so than the puppets), but it tries to follow two very disparate stories without ever trying to bring them together. Also it had no titties. Didn't stick around to watch the third one as it was a bit late.
