Any cigarette smokers that quit around these parts?
« on: December 24, 2015, 05:46:30 AM »
Went the cold turkey route. Which is apparently the worst way to do it, think that's a load of bullshit though.

I've lost the track of time of when I last had a cigarette, but its somewhere between the 5-8 day point. Strong urges come and go. Strongest urges are when I see people light up in tvs and movies. Urges go away if I psyche myself up mentally or do any small activity that gives any joy.

Main reasons to quit were:
The pros of smoking are incredibly shitty. I felt like shit instantly after a cigarette, no joy in the act. The idea that I couldn't quit if I wanted to made me feel like a bitch. Being at the whim of tobacco in smokable paper is a lot less badass than having control over your body and mind.

To me, the act of smoking itself is the most enticing part, holding something, taking a puff, exhaling, repeat. The physical act is what does it for me.

I quit a decade ago and I haven't touched a cigarette since then. Before that I failed to quit once. It ended up being a three or six months hiatus.

Being addicted to substances is awful. *sips coffee*

Life to me is all about finding shit you enjoy or love that doesn't kill you that easily. While caffeine isn't a squeaky clean drug, there's a lot of ways to get it that won't do harm. The same could be said for cigarettes, but shitty ass gum and patches aren't really fun things to partake in.

That being said, I'm going to smoke weed until I die. I smoke often within a month but its not a daily thing, nor is it really something I crave or need. Its a very worthwhile vice healthwise, weed edibles is also a health conscious alternative to smoking it.

I smoked from when I was 18 until 32. Cold turkey route. It's been almost 9 years since. Can't stand being around cig smoke now.

That sense of smell when you get it back after quitting. :lawd

I've been smoking for five years now, from 18 to 23. I didn't smoke that much per day, probably around 1-3 cigs. But I've chain smoked in many situations, usually at parties or social gatherings. Smoking a pack in three or four hours  :-\

After a week of quitting, my appetite is definitely different and I have more energy.

This part, the ritual, is what still entices me to smoking despite ashtray breath and multinational corp. trying to sell me death :doge

Edit: I don't smoke, and am often disgusted by it, but I get it.

I haven't smoked cigs since my late teens, but sometimes I think it would be nice to have an excuse to step outside and get a second to myself. That's the real appeal to me.

I started vaping at about the one week point without cigarettes and I still do it a couple times a day. It's the closest substitute and I've tapered down to about 1/10 the starting nicotine level. It's still an addiction but you're healthy.

I quit but it wasn't a big deal for me. I never got addicted to them, so I realize I come from an area most smokers or former smokers were never at.

That said, I sometimes still miss it.

Nothing makes me miss smoking than a cold winter night.

Stepping outside and being by yourself or with fellow smoker company. You can be social or deep in thought alone.

I admit I love the actual act of smoking. Lighting it up, holding it all cool...

I miss coffee and cigs in the morning while I read news.

But those moments are few and far between. When you quit, it's important to not be tempted. Think of the good memories, but don't try to replicate them. Just hold them in your heart. I'd say try to take up e-cigs instead. If I still smoked, they'd be what I would smoke. So if you try to go back after going cold turkey, try those out before going back to regular cigarettes.

I can't offer much advice because, again, I was never really addicted. But know that you've got support.

Yes. All of it.

This is why I suggest you take up e-cigs on top of the fact that they help with quitting.

Been a month without any cigs, tobacco products, or nicotine  :)

Blood pressure went down a bit as well.

I've been smoking for 12 years now and really want to quit. My tastebuds and cardio suffer and I'm sick of spending money on the shit. Price hikes in NZ means it costs $50 for a pouch of roll-your-own tobacco and and it's ridiculous.

Going to have to take the plunge and go cold turkey soon.

One of the mental methods that really helped me at the beginning was constantly reminding myself I was perfectly fine and happy without cigarettes for the majority of my life (basically being a kid and teenager and never needing a cigarette).

That price is insane, depending on how much you smoke, $50 in junk food and snacks could last a lot longer than how many cigs you get with a bag of tobacco.

Fully clean from cigs for a moment a few years back but the joy of simultaneously binge drinking and chain smoking was too great for me to deny. :aah Some things are worth dying for.

I quit a long time ago

If i get smashed I might smoke one or two but as that happens once or twice a year I consider myself clean

Think I smoked on and off from 16-30

I swear to god if cig smokers could just smell how they smell to non-smokers we would not have this issue.
YMMV
