Given how successful that game is (esp in Japan), I think either a port of a sequel will probably happen on NX. A port w/ crossplay to Wii U to throw NX users a bone at launch would be nice I think.

A sequel probably can to a small extent (seeing as how the original game pushed consoles in Japan briefly) but nah a port definitely won't as it'll be just an "extra".

That said though, Nintendo really needs third parties on board to save their sinking ship, but I really doubt it'll happen at this point. Nintendo is still behind the times and still have no clue what they're doing half of the times. And their consoles has been gradually selling lower and lower each gen save the Wii. Wii was an exception because it chased a completely different market, all of which moved on to mobile. Can't say I'm too optimistic at this point tbh.

I've been thinking for a while now that we would get the same amount or more Nintendo games if they went third party.

If you cut the costs of hardware out, we definitely would be at this point.

Pokemon and Fire Emblem would work well on phones anyway, Monster Hunter should become a console series at this point. Super Smash Brothers on every platform available would bring in buckets of cash.

Hopefully the NX bombs hard enough for them to not lose staff but get out of making hardware and focus on software only.

If anything, I think their dedicated handheld systems should at least stay. They're still doing okay on that front, and I largely prefer those systems over phones, they're much more comfortable for handheld gaming. But that might be just me because really I just want a dedicated handheld market to still exist.

Not to mention Monster Hunter thrives as a portable experience, so I don't think Japan would really care that much for a console entry.

With their development team restructure, I think it's easier for them to possibly ditch hardware if another failed product launches.  They now have Entertainment Planning & Development and Platform Technology Development.  If hardware continues to be a source of failure, I could totally foresee them dropping the latter and beefing up the former.

Also, fucking force Miyamoto to be a simple advisor.  He's the reason for so many shitty decisions made in regards to software being developed in tandem with hardware.

When it becomes an option, they're already in the same position as Atari, Sega, etc. were - weak, afraid to take chances, poor, and suffering from brain-drain. The third-party transition isn't possible without a massive cost.

I wish The Elder Scrolls 6 will come out this holiday, completely taking the wind out of Nintendo's sails since the next Zelda is supposed to be a Skyrim clone.

Nintendo put in less effort than usual this generation.  I think it's because the Wii U was such a dumpster fire that they wanted to spend minimal amounts of time and money developing software for it.  No need to go all out when the game is only going to sell 1-2 million copies.

I have rock bottom expectations for the NX and don't expect it to be much of an upgrade over the Wii U.  If the Wii U was 2007 era technology, NX might be 2010 era technology and I'm being generous here.  If it is a handheld/console combo then I don't expect it to be any more powerful than the Wii U except maybe some minor memory and CPU upgrades, only because it would be cheaper to get.

Someone is claiming on GAF that the reason it got hit with a delay is because the fabrication plant were given the wrong slides and what they thought they were making for NX were for the new Xbox on two lines while no chips were produced for Nintendo so production got hit.
