Classic albums that you don't enjoy
« on: May 29, 2016, 11:01:14 PM »
Anyone have any of these? Two off the top of my head

Let me get this out of the way; I recognize this a classic of any genre, that Nas is a very talented rapper, and that he's at his peak here. That said, apart form One Love there isn't a single cut I have any urge to revisit on a regular basis. It's fairly personal, but Nas is so technically on point that most of it comes off as kind of clinical, almost sterile at points. I dunno if it's because I was too young to catch it when it came out, but listening to it has always felt like homework in a way to me, though I do enjoy most of the 'classics' from that era much much more.

On the other hand, I don't like this, nor do I get it at all, or really any Pink Floyd record besides Piper At The Gates. I listened to it a bunch when I was like 13, and didn't get it. Then a few years later, one of the first times I got stoned, a friend put it on and it was like "WOAH HOLY SHIT DUDE." I thought I finally got it, but every time since has been as unimpressive as the times before, sober or not.

I agree wrt the parts of the discography that would be considered classic, but I do deeply appreciate the latter day 'fuck you, boomers' era of his career now that he's doing troll shit like frank sinatra cover albums

I have a LONG list of classic rap albums I don't like all that much.

On the Nas tip, I don't much care for IWW outside of I Gave You Power (Black Girl Lost is outright embarrassing).  Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, 3 Feet High and Rising, Moment of Truth, The Infamous, and a whole bunch of other albums just didn't really connect with me.  There are quite a few albums from that era (probably a higher percentage than the ones I found disappointing) that I do fuck with.  Something about the ones I listed makes them sound "old" in a way that makes it tough for them to even hold my attention.  Stuff like the production (I still need to read that article on minimalism the other PD linked in the hip-hop thread) down to how the vocals in older albums tend to sound like they were mixed lower than modern ones keep me from getting the same enjoyment out of them.  I won't act like that's good reason.  I wish I could hear those albums the same way most other people do.

Outside of rap I was pretty bummed out by Since I Left You.  Frontier Psychiatrist is hot, but on the whole the album wasn't all that memorable to me.

I question my taste each time I finally get around to something revered, then end up not liking it.  I'll never call them wack they just didn't move me for whatever reason.

I'm weird with Wu-Tang albums.  LS is now one of my all time favorites, but I didn't really like it all that much the first few listens.  I put it away for months then loved it once I went back.  I've given Cuban Linx a lot of tries over a few years, but I still only like about a third of it.  ODB took some getting used to, but by now I'm almost ready to call the Dirty Version better than the OG 36 Chambers.

Dope.  I can understand not liking bullshit skits like the first minute of Goin Down.  Rest of the track is pure heat though.

Beatles "White Album"

I think the highlights of Cuban Linx either eclipse or outshine the rest of the album. Criminology, Rainy Days and Verbal Intercourse make everything else on the album seem weak

I also never really got SILY. It doesn't do anything Endtroducing didn't do before it and it doesn't sound nearly as good. I thought they were kind of hacks until I heard Girl Talk, who actually embodies the fraud shit I projected onto the avalanches

The early Pink Floyd albums are stoner records.  They moved away from that in the late 70s when stoner music wasn't as big.  If you don't smoke weed when listening to them or at least understand what smoking weed does when you listen to music, then the early Pink Floyd stuff won't register with you.  I hated them until I smoked weed.  I don't care much for them now but I understand why they were so big in the early and mid 70s.

I don't really know anyone who stans for Eminem past 2003.  There was a brief flare up with his 2010 album but it went away pretty quickly after that.

I feel sorry for anyone who thinks any Kanye album is a classic.  Most songs do not hold up because they were never really good in the first place.  Now that Kanye doesn't even produce his own music, I have to wonder why he even bothers considering how poorly his shit sells these days.

"if you don't smoke weed you don't get it" is a really corny excuse for any band/album, and also not even true for pink floyd esp dsotm, as noted

Piper

The Wall has some good songs but it's seriously like 3/4ths filler.

- Jay Z outside of a few classic singles. 99 Problems is ass.

- The Bends is my favorite Radiohead album but I never got into Kid A or OK Computer.

- Can't really bother with Gang Starr albums anymore; again some classic songs in their discography but Guru kind of sucks without a dope Primo beat to carry him.

- Wu-Tang Forever never clicked with me, maybe if it was deflabbed into 1 CD. Liquid Swords, Cuban Linx, 36 Chambers, Ironman, all classics.

Jay-Z hasn't put out a single worthwhile effort since he came out of "retirement" in 2006.  I feel like his albums are classified more as marketing than as an artistic effort.

Paul's Boutique, fucking cornball shite.

I don't like anything from the Beastie Boys.  I hate that one guy's voice that is higher pitched.  I have no idea whose voice it belongs to but it ruins everything that its in, which happens to be everything the Beastie Boys is in.

I remember WTT pretty fondly, Magna Carta had two tracks worth listening to, those tracks with Ross and Jeezy were real nice and a lot of people seem to like American Gangster. He definitely hasn't produced nothing of value, but the post 2006 material does feel a lot like that Buscemi undercover high schooler bit in 30 rock.

Pantera's two albums, Vulgar Display Of Power and Cowboys From Hell. I love the Cowboys From Hell song, and like one or two tracks each on them, but I can't remember shit aside from that. I'm sure we discussed this several times before, but nothing about them really sticks with me.

And I'll say it, don't care much for Dimebag's guitar work, either.

I was going to say the same thing earlier, but I didn't know if there were any Pantera fans here to troll with the post, so I decided to skip it.

Wu tang forever like 99% of double lps is pretty zzz

It's arguably the best hip hop double album  ???

-Reunited
-For Heaven's Sake
-Cash Still Rules (Scary Hours)
-As High As Wu Tang Get
-Maria
-A Better Tomorrow
-It's Yourz

-Triumph
-Impossible
-Little Ghetto Boys
-Deadly Melody
-The City
-The Projects
-Bellz Of War
-The MGM
-Hells Winter Staff
-Heaterz

which of those tracks are bad, fam

Not to mention nearly every beat is dope and RZA was doing orchestrated hip hop and sped up soul samples better than anyone at the time. Shit directly influenced the sound that later came on Supreme Clientele and the Kanye/Just Blaze productions for Roc A Fella.
