Lyte can you try and run Star Tropics 2? It doesnt seem to work for me. No audio, and I can't get past the save screen. If I hit reset, the Classic freezes up.

It boots up OK for me and doesn't freeze the system up if I reset, but I also have no audio and it won't recognize a name I input into a play file.

Ok, same for me (the machine resets for me as well). Must be incompatible with the classic? Explains why it wasnt included in the original 30....

It may be something with the Hakchi 2 application.  Some people have said they've had better success using the original, longer method.  I'm sure all this stuff will be fixed soon enough though.

Building an "ultimate NES list" for my Classic, and for when I flash other people's systems for money.

I have this so far. I can only have about 90 games total (the exact number so far is 97 without issues), so 30 + 60. What should I add or remove? Trying to go for some of the more common / popular titles people played.

Adventure Island 2
Adventure Islan 3
Adventure of Lolo
Adventure of Lolo 2
Adventure of Lolo 3
Batman

never played it but always wanted to. all those mid-90s nes sequels got lost in the shuffle. it's a shame bc there were a lot of great games that got forgotten until relatively recently.

many NES games have not aged well

granted I'd rather play NES games than literally any game on PS4 or X1, but still

SMB3
Doki Doki Panic
Ninja Gaiden

Off the top of my head those are the only games I'd like to play

Best 'Vania on NES for sure.  Hard as fuck though.

I tried to play Metroid this one time and that was basically unplayable. Really slow and weird.

I mean sometimes I look at a game and I'm like yo that seems pretty cool but then I got bored pretty quick once you realize it's basically the same thing over and over again. Like Kai no Boken. Although that game holds a special place in my heart for giving Arino so much trouble. :lol

Good lesser-talked about NES titles:

Shatterhand
Power Blade 1 and 2 (2, not as much as 1)
Kickle Cubicle
Goonies II
Kick Master
Willow
Crystalis
Shadow of the Ninja
Journey to Silius
Metal Storm
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Vice: Project DOOM
Tecmo Cup Soccer / Captain Tsubasa
Bucky O'Hare
Xexyz
Faria
Wrecking Crew
Fire 'n Ice
Panic Restaurant
The Krion Conquest

Also, apparently "y can't metroid crawl" guy managed to eventually beat the game with the help of people on the Miiverse :)

I too used to think the NES wasn't all that until I decided to educate myself.  In fairness to its detractors, most of the better games are the late-era lesser-known titles and a lot of the games that people have endlessly insisted are stone-cold-classics over the years really aren't all that fantastic.  There's just a lot of ignorance surrounding the system, even among hardcore NES triumphalists.  Like, none of the Castlevania games would make my top 30 action-platformer list for the system.  I think the OG Metroid is real hard to go back to.  Nintendo's own stuff for the system isn't really too polished outside of the Mario games, mostly because they really wound down game development before the system had been mastered by developers - most of their better-known stuff was released in the 'still expermenting' phase.  Also, a lot of the best games are actually licensed, which throws people off, because everybody tries to warn people away from those (it's true that the worst garbage is typically licensed).

List of good, lesser-recommended games:

Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Batman
Mitsume ga Tooru
Hi no Tori
New Ghostbusters II
Bio Miracle Bokette Upa
Gradius 2
Moon Crystal
Don Doko Don 2
Gumshoe
Gimmick!
Little Nemo
Kick Master
Metal Storm
Shatterhand
Little Samson
Zanac
Abadox
Faxanadu
Crystalis

etc. etc. etc. on my laptop so don't have my romlist handy.  It's a great system.

I'm a huge Metroid spaz, but have never thought the original (and II) aged well. Never understood the people who say that seemingly just because it doesn't have a map. Zero Mission is how you imagine it was basically. Even Prime has more flexible movement and it's first person. :lol

Castlevania III is pretty good tho? Guess I haven't counted to see if it's top 30?

Re: Nintendo Classic Mini Console Hacked- Load Your Own ROMs!
« Reply #159 on: January 11, 2017, 10:36:27 PM »
Castlevania III is good.  There are just lots more, better games.  'Action-platformer' is just the best-served genre on the system, so it's more a reflection of the quality and depth of material there in general than a diss on CV.  That said, I don't like the slow, stiff gameplay of the series and I don't put up with the bullshit that fans always seem to overlook (stairs, for example).  CV's mindshare and ongoing classic status was always down to right-place, right-time, right-subjectmatter.  Gameplay was pretty secondary.

No fucking way.

CVIII has endless characters, multiple endings, hard ass gameplay, replay value up the wazoo, amazing music and style. It is the definitive CV barring SOTN.

Many of the games you mention, like Metroid, aren't even coveted as the best the system has to offer.

You just don't lik CV.

But this?

That's a bad comparison.  SF1 had shitty gameplay/controls.  Metroid does not.  It's still very playable and I like to go back to it every now and then.  I've played the original Metroid far more than I ever did Metroid II and even Super Metroid.

Yes, still enjoyable as well if not great. It used various tricks to create a sense of size that later tech allowed Metroid 3 to do in a less bewildering way.

New version of Hakchi is out with lots of improvements.  Exit to the menu using down and select!  Game Genie support!  Looks like Startropics II is working!

Version 2.09: https://github.com/ClusterM/hakchi2/releases/tag/2.09

Quote
What's new:

'Can't repack ramdisk' error on some systems should be gone now.
Device detection bug fixed (thanks to David Winter!)
Automatic file attributes fix (e.g. "WinRAR" bug fixed).
Game selection presets. Now you can create presets for favorite games, party games, etc. It's useful since NES Mini don't like huge amount of games at once.
Search by first letters of game, just press Ctrl+F.
Much better PNG compression for covers, x4 more disk space.
NES carts database with release dates, publishers, etc. Just add game and all fields will be filled automatically if it exists in database.
Automatic IPS patches. Now you don't need other application to patch problem games. Patch files stored in "patch" folder. Problem game will be detected automatically by CRC32 checksum. Release already contains patches for "Battletoads", "Robocop 3", "Snow Bros.", "Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure" and "Startropics II". You can add and your own patches too.
Game Genie support. Just enter your codes (comma/spaces/semicolon separated) in special field and sync. Cheats will be activated automatically.
Mapper #87 added to list of confirmed mappers.
Epilepsy protection settings - you can disable epilepsy protection for original 30 games or for all games at once.
Clovercon hack! Now you can exit to menu using "Down+Select" combination. All you need now is controller cable extension...
Some interface improvements - you can delete games using del key, etc.
    Many minor bugfixes.

Tiny update based on recent user requests:

Press Shift+F5 to update all your ROMs library info using database.
Extended font working on Famicom Mini again.
Now you can select button combination for reset.
Some FDS improvements: correct cover size, automatic header fix, "--fds-auto-disk-side-switch-on-keypress" argument by default.
8bit PNG compression is optional now since image quality is not so good.
Now you can remove thumbnails at the bottom of screen (via settings menu).
    Bugfixes.

They've made a lot of QOL improvements and even fixed some games (LIKE STARTROPICS 2) -- really good progress so far.
