US got the first gold of the games with Women's Shooting :rock

The Women's Road Race yesterday was intense.  The Dutch woman who was in the lead took a horrible crash about 15 km or so from the finish.  It looked fucking brutal.  And then the American woman was in first place until 10 seconds out from the finish when she was overtaken by the 3 woman chasing group and came in 4th.

I like the Olympics.  I basically just watched all weekend.

Are you in the US?  You can use NBC's website to watch pretty much any event.

That crash was nasty.

I'm surprised so many well known names went out in tennis in the first round.

So far I've watched my wife watch some handball and tennis, that's it. Maybe when athletics start I'll watch some stuff. I really used to be into this stuff but it has really waned due to doping (same with the Tour).

I like watching the streams of random sports so I don't have to deal with all the ways that NBC makes the games unwatchable. Weightlifting was surprisingly dramatic.

That women's road race crash was horrific. The way she was lying on the road she looked like she might be dead or paralyzed. There was a similar crash in the men's road race, cycling seems like the most dangerous event in the Olympics.

God I hate beach volleyball.

It was brutal enough I questioned going for my morning ride today.

It looked like she fishtailed and happened to counter-steer just as her front wheel hit the slick center line?  Shit freaks me out

http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/08/sport/sun-yang-mack-horton-australia-china/

Quote
Hong Kong (CNN)Australia has refused to apologize after an Olympic swimmer sparked outrage by accusing China's Sun Yang of being a "drug cheat."
Speaking to the media after beating Sun by a mere .16 of a second to win the 400m freestyle gold , Mack Horton described his win as one "for the good guys."

Prior to the race, Horton said Sun, who served a three-month ban for testing positive for a banned substance in 2014, was a "drug cheat."
Australia's chef de mission Kitty Chiller flatly ruled out any chance of an apology on Tuesday, according to CNN affiliate Sky News Australia.
Quote
The Australian's comments sparked fury in China after an emotional Sun broke down in the post-race press conference, accusing Horton of deliberately trying to psych him out.
A hashtag "Sun Yang Don't Cry" quickly went viral on the Chinese web, and Horton's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts were flooded with comments attacking him and demanding he apologize to Sun.
:chinacry

The reaction from China's Global Times:
Quote
It's not a big deal to us. In many serious essays written by Westerners, Australia is mentioned as a country at the fringes of civilization. In some cases, they refer to the country's early history as Britain's offshore prison. This suggests that no one should be surprised at uncivilized acts emanating from the country. We should think the same way.

There's a lot of vitriol in these Olympics.  There's been booing of Russian athletes and lots of commentators talking about Yang too.  I'd rather people leave that shit at the door.

Is there anything more American?  :american

He also thought the competition was really weak in general and he could probably rack up a few more gold medals to cement his place as the most decorated athlete of all time. He was right, of course.
