I'm not gonna buy a 4K TV for a minor visual bump.  :lol  I'll replace my good ol' 1080P set when it finally breaks.  For gaming, I use monitors.  I have an ultra-wide and a regular monitor, both are 1080P and were purchased for the low input lag, something that is a problem on 4K TVs.  If a good "gaming" 4K monitor comes along for a good price, sure, will bite- but right now those are like $1,000+.

This is pretty much it because everyone knows PS4 PRO can't do 4k.

I mean you'd need a 1060 GTX at least to do it on medium settings native.

To add to this, something being rendered in 4K is a lot more noticeable and impressive compared to 4K output. And we're nowhere close to 4K being the norm for rendering.

Bleeeeh now that I keep thinking about it it would be cheaper to build a 4K gaming rig and a good monitor then buying a decent 4K tv with low input lag.

Unless you're looking to supersample/downsample on PC, even on PC it's a "two or so year on" tech right now. Anyone buying into 4K for gaming right now is dumb or stupidly rich. Especially on consoles. Why would developers cut themselves off at the knees with a split user-base?

PSVR doesn't and can't fix the biggest issue with VR, it completely constricts and suffocates natural awareness and ability in the name of very simple immersion. Can't text, eat, drink, talk to someone face to face.

Even when technology improves, AR is a lot more likely to be a hit than VR, mainly due to practicality and not losing nearly as much natural awareness or ability.

remember how Microsoft was entering this gen with a focus on pushing Kinect and streaming crap and being an all-in-one box of some kind which let Sony get the hardware leg up because they went simpler as part of getting their shit together after last gen and then at the last minute MS upped the clocks to try and close the gap

now this reads like the Pro was designed really to push PSVR, MS heard "PS4K" and went "oh shit" and wound up with the S (to get 4K support out early...and sounds like an absurdly well designed piece of hardware) and Scorpio (which is going to be overkill, especially with these things all supposed to be running the same software semi-compatibility)

In this day and age where only a fraction of developers can afford to make engines capable of doing 4K and the rest of us are in the Unity Ghetto (which does support PS4 Pro to a degree already) focusing half your strategy on even higher end graphics and performance is an incredibly silly idea.

I'm not sold on it either. If it is capable of pushing the performance if first-party games from 30 to 60 FPS then I might get one, but I don't think that is likely to happen.

The new peripherals are nice though. If my launch PS4 ever breaks then I'll replace it with a PS4Pro.

IIRC, DF said that Sony is recommending 1800p upscaled over 1440p, though they don't think it'll be able to do it well. And that even 1440p is a stretch. Their reference card simulation couldn't do both resolution and settings bumps in basically every game.

Also, that the design documents allow 1080p minimum, which is more likely. Especially with some of the newer methods of temporarily halving the resolution and such.

I really don't understand the hype around Scorpio.     It's going to be a $1000 console and here's why:
1. It's made by Microsoft. Microsoft's no.1 priority is making money first and then come the customers. So knowing  MS they will charge an extra $200 profit per console.
2. Do the distinguished mentally-challenged fellow's here actually know the cost of a 4k@60fps gpu. FYI it's the gtx 1080 for $700 and even that can't achieve 60hz at 4k.
3. Any half witted person can see, that for the price you buy a Scorpio, it's better and more  cost effective to build a gtx 1080 powered gaming PC for less
3. Very few people can afford to blow a 1000 dollars on a console. So Sony is actually being smart by keeping the specs and hence price reasonable and targeting the mainstream market market who can afford to spend, at the most $500 on a new console. It's a similar move to amd's rx 480 focusing on the budget side while delivering a premium gaming experience. These moves will pay dividends for both.
4. All xbox games are playable on PC.
5. PS4'S exclusive library is literally UNMATCHED. It contains some of the best games ever. A PS4 is worth buying for its exclusives alone.

So Finally, Outcome?
Sony WINS AGAIN.

Scorpio is dumb for so many other reasons then PS4 Pro, the main one being that all MS games are on PC now so there is not point in owning one unless they sell it without Windows tax/MS tax at cost price.

Minor spec bump and Sony was completely blindsided by Scorpio. They didn't anticipate Microsoft starting the next console generation so early.

This will probably end up being a dud once people realize most games just won't be native 4K.

Put in my pre-order.  Realize I don't even care about it until I play another PS4 game, and that's not all that often.  Pretty much just buying it to have for FFXV in November since the game apparently runs like shit right now on regular PS4, so maybe it'll be more stable on PS4P.

Scorpio will be for people that don't want to mess around with a PC. There's still a market for that. Not sure if its a market interested in a MS console though.

I'm curious about the Scorpio, but more likely to just get a gaming rig.

Beside, Horizon, which looks like it could be great, there isn't a single Sony exclusive I can bring myself to care about.

This gen showed that casual crowd wants the benefits of PC gaming with the convenience of a console. Fallout 4 mods was a pretty big deal for them. If MS made Scorpio into a product that straddles the line between PC customisation and Console accessability without being completely rancid shit like the Steambox. Then they can make something really appealing to the crowd that doesn't want the maintenance and fucking around that goes into PC gaming but also let the hardcore PC grognards buy their games on PC.

But then the day MS announces "Halo MCC Collection is now available in Windows Store" is the day where every Linux user sells out and moves to proprietary software. PC gamers lust for Halo.

The PS4 Pro feels like a missed opportunity to bridge that same gap Microsoft are nosing into and also managed to piss off a lot of people who now realized Sony's upgrade train and walled garden doesn't sound as nice as they thought it did back in April.

But then the day MS announces "Halo MCC Collection is now available in Windows Store"

We'll see if Halo 5: Forge is a success. For me, I'm downloading it right now to see the performance, but UWP apps have burned me with how it changes configurations or has weird performance issues to where I've sworn off buying anything from the Windows store (as if I ever did  :doge ) forever.

People could just play Halo: Online illegally right now if they don't want to deal with Halo 5's changes or UWP. So if folks are REALLY dying for that, they can port it to Linux maybe as well. But the major stumbling block will be the Windows Store. Quantum Break only had like... what... 5K sales? :doge :doge
