You people are truly, truly reprehensible.

I lost a dear, dear brother in these horrific attacks.

He left behind two beautiful children.

I know what you'll say, that "it's black humor", or that it's your right "to offend as much as I am to be offended", but it doesn't make this mockery any less disgusting.

All I can say is, it's a tragedy that my brother was caught up in these horrific attacks, and that the FBI never checked why he was taking flying lessons in the first place.

I remember I was playing Total Annihilation when my ex called to tell me some planes crashed into the WTC.

TA was such a good game.

TA was a masterpiece.

I had just been in Japan for a couple months when 9/11 happened. I was speaking to my sister, who was FTFO over the first plane hitting. She wasn't being clear, so I thought some idiot in a Cessna had critfailed his Pilot roll. While we spoke, the 2nd plane hit, and I realized it wasn't a mistake.

It's stunning how the terrorists have "won." The USA took all the goodwill from the entire planet and pissed on it by knowingly deciding to preemptively invade a country they knew had nothing to do with 9/11, and almost certainly knew was not hoarding WMDs. The middle-east is less stable than at any other time in my lifetime. Tolerance of Islam is at an utter low in the USA. We have layers of security theater at every airport which is provably ineffective and even manages to be corrupt to boot. We have limited freedom of movement.

I also think about Flight 94, and how the narrative treats them as heroes for managing to "just" crash their plane instead of letting the terrorists make it to their target. If it had been the only flight hijacked and the result was the same, the narrative would have vilified the passengers for not letting professionals deal with negotiation, blah-blah-blah.

wait... wut :doge

Because we know the other planes were successful in hitting their targets, we also know that the Flight 94 passengers managed to prevent a greater disaster.

If #94 had been the only plane in the scenario, and the passengers' interference caused the flight to crash, it would not have been reported as heroism. It would have been reported as civilians interfering with proper channels, screwing up professional negotiation efforts, leading to the crash, costing the lives of everyone on-board.

Also, wasn't the fact that the passengers got word of the other attacks (via radio/SMS, I forget) the reason that they decided to intervene? If the other attacks wouldn't have happened the passengers would have had no clue that the hijackers were about to use the plane as a weapon.

I dunno. I'd consider Flight 93 (even if it was solo) a heroic effort. But it would really depend on if the hijackers plans came to light first. I mean even if the professionals tried to deal in negotiation, it'd either have 1) shot the plane down (thereby killing them) or 2) possibly have had a few hostages killed during the meantime and/or have had their plan succeed anyway due to negotiation taking a while.

I really can't see a way out for them that would've been successful.

Also, wasn't the fact that the passengers got word of the other attacks (via radio/SMS, I forget) the reason that they decided to intervene? If the other attacks wouldn't have happened the passengers would have had no clue that the hijackers were about to use the plane as a weapon.

Also, yeah. This is like pre-social media ( :doge ) days, so there was no CNN/Fox/et. al. 24/7 news cycles to stream on their (totally not smart-)phones. The hijackers were pretty successful in grinding America's sense of security to a halt and sneaking onto planes with things to hijack them and there was pretty much nothing the passengers could've done besides attempting to attack them if they knew a 'jacking was going on.

I'm strictly talking about how the media would have painted a picture of it. But you guys are right: there is no way to know outside of the context it was actually in. FWIW, I think they did the right thing. If it had been only one plane, it still would have been the right thing. This was a new scenario, there was no way it was going to go well unless Harrison Ford or Wesley Snipes had been on board.
