GAF isn't THAT bad. Where else are you going to post? Something Awful? Legit question: What other forums are out there with such a large user-base that you can get news from?
1) Twitter
2) The age in which I wouldn't want to be X has changed as I've aged. When I was a teen, I thought adults playing video games was like, totally lame. Many did. Spending time online is basically this generation's version of talking on the phone, which as zomgee can confirm, us olds used to do all the time too. Except now, you accidentally learn shit about other people and the world at large, rather than just what Suzy said about Tim. Of course, what we invariably learn from internet discussions is that the world is filled with assholes, but still.
1) I just can't wrap my head around Twitter. I swear I consider myself to be pretty okay with computers but I can't "get" Twitter. The only Twitter interaction I have is going on /r/blackpeopletwitter on Reddit to see memes because they're hilarious
2) I can understand that. I've spent more time reading GAF and feeling disgusted and irritated than I did a few years ago. Everyone is jaded and cynical now, hating everything and wanting everything to be all-inclusive. It's a double standard. I do enjoy the Off-Topic's news sections just to see what's going on in the world though because otherwise I'm too lazy to look for headlines myself.

It has continued to get worse and worse, to the point where all the crap that infected the Off-Topic forum has now seeped into the Gaming forum.

Reddit? GameFAQs/Gamespot? Giant Bomb? Twitter? FB groups? Hell, there's plenty of news sites out there that update all the time anyway.
You can still go to GAF to get news...there's just no reason to post much anymore. Everything gets lost in the shuffle and/or you have idiots piling on you for posting an opinion. I got shit for pointing out that Rock Paper Shotgun had more than one set of impressions for Mass Effect in a thread that made it sound like RPS just hated it. It was enough to make me go back to just posting in the few community threads I still like enough to browse daily.
I can't stand all the politically-correct bullshit from SJWs and millennials. Fuck off with all that crap. The forum sucks now. I thought for a brief moment that things might improve with Bishop gone, but now I see more threads being locked for the dumbest reasons than ever before. It has never been so bad there.
I see some of the better posters have long-left forums. They haven't gone elsewhere...they're just on Twitter/FB now. If it wasn't for smaller forums like the Bore, I'd be done with forums too.
Not gonna lie, when I came to look at threads the other day and saw the Meme thread and this thread, I about died. It's been probably 6-7 months since I've visited here and hot damn y'all have done a 180. I know everyone used to call out shitty posters and all that but now you're all full-on frothing at the mouth at the fuckery going on over there. Also not gonna lie, I started to lurk that other site that gets immediately deleted on GAF anytime it's mentioned for shits and giggles, then started joining in on the conversation. Which seems to be the same conversation being had over here now, just IN A SHITTY HORRIBLE TO READ-ON-THE-PHONE FORMAT
I enjoy Reddit but mainly for memes and fuckery. The website's layout is just too circle-jerk oriented to actually get involved in conversations, whereas with the place that can't be mentioned on GAF has the same layout but way less members so it still feels like you can get a word in. I haven't used GameFAQs in AGES but yeah, that's an option I suppose. I enjoy Giant Bomb's podcasts and content but haven't checked out their forums and I even paid for premium for a good bit there, derp. Twitter, I'm too stupid for Twitter apparently. Facebook groups might be okay but then you've got your real name linked and all that and yadda yadda.
You're right about not posting on GAF. I actually don't. I just lurk and laugh. Occasionally I'll throw in a comment here and there but it's lost in the sea of REEEEEEEEEE! What got to me was in the Ghost Recon: Wildlands Open Beta thread where people would come in with drive-by shit posts and peace out with no discussion just because it's Ubisoft. Then the game comes out and whaddayaknow, it's actually quite good and not a piece of shit. Obviously the drive-by shit posts have no repercussions from moderation but if you so much as say anything out-of-line in a political thread, "You're not a good fit for this community."
I had a brain fart and completely forgot about Something Awful though. I do post there a lot but of course there's the $10 paywall. The Ghost Recon thread there is huge. There's also more than just "Gaming" and "Off-Topic" as well which is still a completely fucking stupid idea for NeoGAF. You have a moderator for the gaming side going over to off-topic and attempting to moderate discussions there, having no idea what the fuck because they're an insular video game nerd. It doesn't work so that's where the "anonymous" Mod Bot steps in because even with the moderation that's there, the administration seems too chicken shit to actually show their actions. Own up to your locks. Own up to your bans. You're not getting paid for it so what's the problem?
Like with Something Awful, there's multiple different sub-forums with different moderators for each one that actually understand those subjects. You can't have the basement dweller in Gaming moderating The Crackhead Clubhouse.
