I think there's a lot of truth to Stern's take on Trump. Donald wants to be loved more than anything, and hates being hated. But when he is hated and loved at the same time, he can only pay attention to the haters. I think he is really ambivalent about the job, and is full of rage and self-pity, and has no hope of climbing out of the pit he's in given the policies he's pursuing and the people he's surrounded himself. He will never be welcome in New York City again -- imagine that!

Hopefully things won't end in war, but in mere resignation and disgrace.

South Park is a pretty popular show, especially amongst the younger audience, so them pulling the "turd sandwich vs giant douche" shtick again (it wasn't funny the first time) probably kept quite a few people from voting. I'm not saying it could've made a difference in the outcome, but it could have helped, at least.

Nobody is saying they're alt-right. But to pretend they weren't pulling the "both sides are the same" BS is ridiculous. Shit, they reused the "giant douche vs turd sandwich" analogy, which is nothing but a "both sides are the same" argument.

It's not surprising that they're backing off Trump.

For years, the show has operated under the assumption that critique of absolutely everything was the only way to achieve neutrality In a lot of cases, it made them revolutionaries. But in recent years, it's led to them falling on the shit side of history. They mocked Al Gore for trying to alert people about climate change. Distilled Caitlyn Jenner's complex relationship with media & the trans community into a one-line meme that made it impossible to discuss the subject in online circles. And worst of all, pushed the idea that Clinton & Trump were equally unpleasant options. I hold them more responsible for millennial voter apathy in 2016 than any other show on TV. For all their achievements, history will not look fondly on South Park.

It was already too late, dude. South Park spent so long arguing for not caring about shit and "living for the lulz" that no amount of parody could have fixed that they'd successfully convinced their audience that a dude who brags about molesting women was hilarious. This is what people mean when they accuse South Park of being alt-right: it's a truncated way of noticing that not all South Park fans are alt-right, but boy fucking howdy do a lot of alt-righters like South Park.

Even ignoring moments where the show's "satire" just got straight up evil (remember when the show "reclaimed" the word "taco" so it didn't mean "gay people" anymore? You're welcome, gays! Us straight people fixed it for ya!), South Park has advocated the "both sides!" thing so long in the interest of being "impartial" that when we had a choice between a shitty politician and Hitler Again, it was common narrative to act like Clinton's emails and comments of "deplorables" (no matter how correct she was in using that term) were on equal footing with cavorting with neo-nazis and wanting to fuck your daughter. This is literally how fascism infiltrates: the second you act like their points are even worth considering, you've already elevated them to a status of "just an opinion." They actively advocated not giving a shit during the times where we most certainly needed to.
