The vast majority of people who complain about 'gentrifcation' are white people who have moved into historically black and Latino neighborhoods and then complained because the 'authentic' or 'REAL part of City XYZ' wasn't vibrant enough to give them the personality they failed to acquire on their own.

Yeah, my area went from shitty heroin junkie gathering place to most attractive suburb in the city - i have to deal with living in hipster heaven now, but i can quit my job and live off the proceeds if i sell the house and move to a bigger one in a cheaper area. There's a huge difference between bettering a neighborhood through funding, support etc. from the government/community and gentrification through people who want to take advantage of the bad economy there and draw people of a higher affluency onto a community for self-benefit.

 Usually when discussing gentrification the focus is mainly on the latter and "gentrifiers" rather than public funding and improving neighborhoods, which leads into displacement, higher cost of goods, higher cost of living, loss of culture etc.

 Displaced persons have to transition into new areas and in many cases it leads to homelessness. Also "crime" doesn't just disappear instead goes into neighboring areas without any sort of support for them.

The money or political will to benefit those poor neighborhoods oftentimes doesn't come until the affluent people start moving in. At best, there is a sweet spot where the impoverished people who have lived there for years see a tangible benefit of what the affluent bring to the area, but it hasn't yet turned into San Francisco. The area I've lived in has tried for years to get money for some of the shittier parts of town with little or no success, but in the last decade we've seen hipsters move in to some of those areas and really turn them around. The housing prices and cost of living has gone up considerably, though hardly to the point where it's wildly unaffordable... yet. But the increase in housing prices has lead to higher property taxes, which in turn has lead to neighborhood upgrades, once asked police presence, as well as considerable private and public investment.

Gentrification doesn't usually start out as gentrification, in my experience. It mutates into it, and even the people causing it hate it just as much as the people being forced out.
