Sega Saturn vs Nintendo Wii U [Also 32X]
« on: October 26, 2016, 07:00:05 AM »
For me the clear, clear, winner is Sega Saturn of course with a much better library then you expect from a console that sold only 9.5 million units.

Compared to the 13.5 million units of the Wii U and lack of games it's a bit odd really.

Saturn by far:

Radiant Silvergun
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Shining Force 3
Guardian Heroes
Far East of Eden: The Apocalypse IV
X-Men vs Street Fighter
Waku Waku 7
Groove On Fight
Magic Knight Rayearth
Dragon Force
Shining the Holy Ark
Galactic Attack/Layer Section
Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Steamgear Mash
Astal
Sega Rally
Virtua Cop
Samurai Spirits RPG
Linkle Liver Story
Shienryu
Tryrush Deppy
Langrisser 3-5
Wachenroder

Amazing system if you don't mind importing, have cash, and like 2D, shmups, and fighting games. Which describes me to a tee (except for the "having cash", I did when I first started collecting for the system at least)

I gotcha, Slime-

Japanese-only releases from Tiesto's list:

Radiant Silvergun
Far East of Eden: The Apocalypse IV
X-Men vs Street Fighter
Waku Waku 7
Groove On Fight
Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Steamgear Mash
Samurai Spirits RPG
Linkle Liver Story
Shienryu
Tryrush Deppy
Langrisser 3-5
Wachenroder

And the Saturn being able to easily play imports, with a converter, makes it much better than the Wii U.  But even the U.S. Saturn shits all over it too.

Really it boils down to the Sega games and arcade ports, the Capcom arcade ports, and some of the other arcade ports and the original 2D games/RPGs shitting all over the Wii U.

Gotta say, I pretty much never play my Saturn anymore though.  I'd rather just play the ROMs of all the arcade ports I have instead of the Saturn ports.  Been thinking about selling it off.  I see that games like Burning Rangers and Magic Knight Rayearth go for insanely high prices now.

Also take Waku Waku 7 off that list.  It's not the best of ports and a much better, pretty much perfect version is on PS2.  The best version of the Samurai Spirits RPG is the Neo CD version.  But I'm just being ultra nitpicky now.

Oh man, this GAF thread on the N64 is gold.  The N64 had some good games, sure, but it in no way even comes close to the PS1 and even Saturn in terms of quality titles.  "Quality over quantity." :lol  So much crap on that system.

I mean, let's give it credit where it's due- Super Mario 64 was hugely innovative and essentially became the template for so many 3D platformers.  OK.  Goldeneye brought a new kind of FPS experience to consoles and had 2P-4P local multiplayer on a single console, which was a first, IIRC.  OK.  Then you have your other Nintendo games like Wave Race, the Zeldas, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., some more RARE stuff, some wrasslin' games, and...that's about it.

There were also things during that era that I never understood.  Like Capcom releasing Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES instead of the Nintendo 64.  LOLWUT.

I worked retail during this time and the Nintendo 64 was a software drought machine most of the time.  The thirst for new games was very real and people would go nuts for anything remotely decent on the system.  We imported Mario Kart 64, which came with a controller, and sold it for $200 a pop...and sold right out.  People would grow bored and trade their systems in, then rush to buy them back when the next Nintendo title hit six months later.  It was great for business but so hard to recommend that system.  For a while we used to just refer to it as "The Nintendo Goldeneye" since that's all anyone gave a shit about.

Like, its hard to put into words how people put clunky and barely functional collectathon platformers and FPS games that run at 10 FPS on some sort of golden pedestal. The N64 had a boring library at the time of release.

Library?  LOL.  It launched with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64.

What played like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on PC?  Everything was like Quake/UT at the time.  I guess No One Lives Forever and Half-Life come close...but weren't those released after Goldeneye?

You have to give that game props for the way it played and allowing for local MP the way it did.

There's way, way more than what's on that list.  While English localizations died out pretty fast, there were a ton of awesome Japanese games that kept coming out.  Sega outside Japan ditched the console pretty fast.  We never even got the other parts to Shining Force III.

Stuff was being released even after the Dreamcast was out, and in some cases multi-platform games were better on the Saturn than they were on the Dreamcast, like Street Fighter Zero 3.  Most of the games I own for the Saturn are Japanese.  Actually most of my PS1 games are too, although a lot of those titles did get localized, at least.

if you liked 2D games during that era, Saturn was the way to go, without question.

Except for Neo-Geo games.  Most of them were average or crappy on Saturn.  Sound and animation issues.  They never used the 4MB RAM expansion cart though.  For a year or so I was all about the Neo CD and had virtually the entire game library for it.  It was almost all I played...then the system died.  I got a replacement and it died too.  Then I got an AES and could afford like 1-2 carts if I was lucky.  :doge

N64 had a few games with 2D graphics that looked...well...alright, anyway. Storage space might have been a bigger issue at the time than the ability of the hardware itself to do 2D graphics, but I dunno.

Angel Studios performed some devil magic, though, with Resident Evil 2.

Fork over the $300+, play it over a weekend or 2 (it's about a 15 hour game), then put it back up on Ebay. You'll make most, if not all, of your $$ back. Fun game but I don't see myself replaying all too often, but it's nice to own.

I am the worst Saturn owner, I haven't spent more than 5 minutes with it. :lol
Same. I bet mine doesn't even work any more, it's been sitting in a cardboard box so long now...

Lager calling Beetle Adventure Racing a stinker.

:cmonson

20-30?  I'd actually be curious.

But even then that's way lower than the amount of good games on the Saturn and Playstation.

Alright, fine:

Super Mario 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Mischief Makers
Beetle Adventure Racing
F-Zero X
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario Kart 64
Orge Battle: Person of Lordly Caliber
Star Fox 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Goldeneye 64
Perfect Dark
Sin and Punishment
Mario Party series
Rogue Squadron
Mario Tennis
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Jet Force Gemini
Super Smash Bros.
Yoshi's Story
Paper Mario
Goemon's Great Adventure
Harvest Moon 64
Kirby 64
AKI wrestling games
Wave Race 64

I played a lot of N64 games.

I took out the crap (and removed NFL Blitz, which was multi-plat).  So pretty much Nintendo, Rare, and wrasslin' like I said, with a few extras.  Not a big list considering the system's lifespan.

There were also things during that era that I never understood.  Like Capcom releasing Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES instead of the Nintendo 64.  LOLWUT.

Wasn't the N64 notoriously hot garbage for 2D?

It handled the likes of Mortal Kombat Trilogy OK.  I don't see why they couldn't have tried something like SFA2.  Especially after the RAM expansion pak was released.

One thing I always hated about the N64 are the graphics, it seems nearly every game looks the same... the muddy, blurry textures, the fog, the low resolution. It's also funny how there aren't very many games for the console but it got 5 snowboarding games, even some from Atlus of all people. That's the late 90's for you...
