Recounts are caused by the caravans of Mexicans coming across the American border every year.

Notice the similarity between REcount, REfried beans, and REsetera.

That's really shitty.

It was always going to be like this though. When you look at all of the senate races you realize Democrat’s only lost like 9-11 races depending on how the recounts go. The map was really bad for the dens this year, but holistically they basically almost ran the board.

Honestly, we should abolish the Senate.

You say that now, until the GOP has a super majority in the House and unilaterally repeals all entitlement programs, environmental protections, fills every supreme court position with a hardline conservative, appoints Trump ruler for life and redistributes the wealth again to the 1%. Did I miss anything?

After the Civil War until FDR, the Democrats similarly ran up huge margins in a select few locked down states (mostly the former Confederacy) that ultimately often did nothing to win them control of the Presidency, House or Senate except for unique or select years. It's also why that era first did the whole popular vote losing President wraps up Electoral College thing.

And before this they supported, funded, and profited off slavery.

Thank God for Richard Nixon (Google it you woke morons) .

What's it with this constant recounting business? Why don't they count the votes correctly the first time? You never hear about recounts in European countries.

There's usually an auto recount if the win is less than an arbitrary percentage. Unlike Europe we actually care.

But why? Shouldn't the count be correct the first time?

Yeah, you've brought up the caning of Charles Sumner before.

Like, this is obviously not why you're a Republican. You've made a lot of money and want to keep it and that's understandable. But the "look up Richard Nixon!" bit is kind of interesting. Like is it a common meme on the right that he was a key figure in the CRM? Should I be expecting Dinesh D'Souza to make a documentary about this soon?

Voters in Pahrump on Tuesday picked Republican Dennis Hof, the legal pimp who died last month, to serve in state Assembly District 36.

Electing the former brothel baron and reality TV star Hof, who died at age 72, now sets off a competitive, and convoluted, tri-county process to appoint a living Republican to the seat.

Nye County Republican Central Committee Chairman Joe Burdzinski and former Assemblyman James Oscarson have been tipped as contenders for the job.

Hof jumped out to an apparently insurmountable 36-percentage point lead against Democratic hopeful Lesia Romanov after the first batches of ballots were counted late Tuesday night.

The justice department started the process of school desegregation in the south in '64 or '65 though?

Nixon's admin didn't completely kneecap the process like a hypothetical president George Wallace would've but I'm struggling to see how he's a hero in this.

Nixon was pretty famously racist, we can all acknowledge that right?

Like there are tapes of him talking about negro bastards that want to live like dogs, and suggesting that black people need to be inbred (or are inbred) to make America stronger in 500 years (or something like that, it’s a weird conversation).

I don’t think people (on hate site the Bire) are saying Trump created racism, he just has no qualms about using racism politically and is obviously also racist.

I think both of them were terrible, remarkably akin to Trump/Clinton in tendencies, truthfully. Nixon, like trump, was a smarter business man with a big mouth. Also for being "far right" Wallace's views were remarkably similar to Clinton. That about sums it up. SNAFU as usual for our political leader.

Trump seems to have some antiquated ideas on certain minority groups and nationalities but he doesn't seem racist like those tiki torch fucks.

He used to work/meet and mingle with people of color well before he was President and was pretty progressive on who he hired for his projects.
'real' racists would be opposed to that idea. In fact it fits Trump pretty well that he was friends with Michael Jackson and the likes as he sees himself sort of as an excentric misfit.
He also supported O.J. Simpson, Bill Cosby and Tiger Woods long after it was cool.

On the flip side there's the birther thing and the page ad he took out to ask for the death penalty for suspects who were later acquitted.
However in Trump's case, when it comes to Americans like Warren, Obama, Clinton or Acosta... the grudges seem more on a personal level than singling or calling out groups of people.
Which is precisely why it is hard to make 'racist' stick.

Nixon is also weird in this regard. He could be racist with his comments and in tapes but his policies told a different story. He understood that better race relations would benefit the country more than a racial divide.
In fact, I think that pretty much sums up Nixon. He felt morally superior and smarter than his opponents. He had to do those things because he knew better how to run the country than anyone else.
And he could set aside his own 'feelings' to do what in his view was right for the country. He had a pretty bad case of god-complex.

It's just that if we're meant to "thank God for Richard Nixon" for school integration because the alternative was George Wallace, it's kind of relevant that the waaaaaaay more likely alternative was Hubert Humphrey.

Whose track record on integration was rather different from Wallace's.

I think there are three things going on here:

1) AIA half-remembers some Facebook meme or blog post that owns the libs by giving Nixon credit for civil rights.

2) When I wrote the counterfactual "President George Wallace" as a way of giving Nixon credit for not being as bad as he could have been, AIA figured that Wallace was Nixon's Dem opponent.

3) AIA is getting very nicely baked and didn't expect a fucking pop quiz.

Nixon, like trump, was a smarter business man with a big mouth.
Nixon never worked beyond in his parents store as a youth. He got a grant to Harvard, his rich grandmother paid for college, and he got a scholarship to Duke for his law degree. He spent like three years as an associate at a corporate law firm before going to work for the government and then into the war. When he got back he immediately ran for Congress.
