Mini Mike tryin' but failing to win the meme war like Sanders. Especially funny given how hard some other candidates tried to meme it up (Warren).

How is this video in any way inauthentic?

Well he did throw in jokes...

Honestly even down to his demeanor and the way he moves his hands, it's just a presentation to him, it's all patter. I know at the end of the day it's designed to make the audience feel a certain way, but at least with Stewart you could sense his rage and disgust when he spoke.

Maybe i'd appreciate Noah more if there had never been a Stewart.

I think it’s because he’s not American so it’s all a game to him. It’s like Nintex or Dufus posting here. It might be amusing to them but it doesn’t really matter to them.

Having him host the daily show is just kind of fucking dumb in general. It’s like hiring an American to do a British political satire. You approach it as “lol these brits are fucking dumb” but you don’t really give a shit, as it’s not your country.

I think focusing on Noah is ignoring that the entire staff is completely different. All the correspondents used to also be the writers and look at where their careers have gone. Stewart didn't write things, he was an editor and performer. From what I understand Noah writes far more of his stuff. I don't know if Noah has the same level of control Stewart had over who the writers were but I assume it's still pretty darn high.

Stewart picked Noah in part because he thought the show and the media and everything was going to take on a more international focus and the show needed that kind of voice at its head. He never anticipated a President Trump nor what our media has done in response to that becoming even more insular. Even a fake foreigner like John Oliver tries to avoid straying too far into such issues outside of stuff like Brexit.

The Daily Show, as it was, was also a product of its time, now there are so many internet channels directly inspired by it even if they're limited due to being one man operations. I mean, that's the joke in the name of Last Week Tonight originally, that there's no point in covering this kind of shit in a form of immediacy because you likely just marinated in it all week or all month or whatever.

LAS VEGAS — Joe Biden called on Bernie Sanders to accept greater accountability for tactics and rhetoric of his staunchest supporters and do more to discourage it, after what he called the “outrageous” threats on a prominent union that criticized his healthcare plan.

In an exclusive interview airing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Biden said the Vermont senator “may not be responsible for it, but he has some accountability.”

“You know me well enough to know if any of my supporters did that, I’d disown them. Flat disown them,” Biden said. “The stuff that was said online. The way they threatened these two women who are leaders in that Culinary union. It is outrageous. Just — just go online.”
Specifically, disown shosta now or else!

theres a whole constellation of terms like this (institutional, structural) that signal people like benji to start guffawing b/c they’re deliberately high-fallutin, but all they ever refer to is the racism that takes place outside of people’s heads. so there’s a plausible, if not obvious, point about how social things can be determined by things other than people’s conscious intentions, and it’s wrapped up in language that, at its worst, is dull and lazy. and if you think the scales tip in favor of sneering at the former merely because of the latter, then you are a fucking mark.

except for you filler. because you ironically listened to my not-ironic ted talk. and i thank you for it.

The way they single Bernie out for it is silly.

Here’s a newsflash, every single candidate has bad supporters online. Every single one. I can go find red roses on Twitter that get weird death threats from butt hurt Hillary/Biden/whatever fans

https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/culinary-union-condemns-vicious-attacks-by-sanders-supporters-after-receiving-hostile-calls-emails-tweets
Quote
The politically powerful Culinary Union is punching back at supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who have lashed out at the union after it began distributing a one-pager to members warning that the Democratic presidential hopeful would “end Culinary Healthcare” if elected president.

Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Geoconda Arguello-Kline said in a statement Wednesday that Sanders supporters have “viciously attacked” the union since it began distributing a one-pager to union members that takes specific aim at the Vermont senator over his Medicare-for-all policy.
Quote
Since news of the flyer broke on Tuesday night, the Culinary Union has faced attacks in the form of tweets, phone calls and emails, a union spokeswoman said.

On Twitter, the union has been derided, among other things, as “corrupt,” “incompetent” and “operating in bad faith.” The spokeswoman said the content of the phone calls and emails has largely been the same.

To deny the legitimacy of structure yet also deny its existence. Curious.

:society
its also literally what markets are supposed to be for someone like Hayek. human actors spontaneously engage in exchange leading to -> an emergent price mechanism that reveals preferences better than any individual could that itself -> the actors back on the micro level respond to, eventually causing markets to clear. the entire upshot of neoliberal (like, not in the cute, huge sense of the term. the actual, narrow sense of the term neoliberal) poli econ is a polemic against central planners and men of system by demonstrating how a common good can only emerge out of individual self-regard. and also that conscious attempts to bring about that common good are perverse, in the sense that they necessarily produce opposite, or countervailing evils instead.

I don't know what this means, who's high-fallutin now?!? :bolo
i just mean those airy, scary words like ‘structural’, esp. when appended before problem words and other -isms. do you not guffaw at them? :jeanluc

I'd say no but I'm sure there's exceptions. In this case of racism I think that things like "institutional racism" or "systemic racism" are good in that they can concrete an idea and you can begin proposing targets and solutions.

Although I probably have gotten on people, like on GAF/ERA, for their usage of the terms. Or that things are signs of it. I recall one of those shopkeep/baker examples where highly intellectual people were describing it as an example of institutional/systemic bigotry. (Likely enforced by the corrupt and incompetent Culinary Union.)
