Shocking that you can boost a person when they write a book defending the internment of Japanese-Americans (as a way of justifying post-9/11 racial profiling), and then years later they become Bad. Just no way to see this coming.

Why not ban him from twitter? It's impossible to de-plaform the president, who can hold daily "news" conferences and be picked up live by every network. This strikes me as a perfect example of something where half measures hurts you. They slapped fact checking warnings on his tweets today and he accused them of bias/censorship. If you ban him, what's the difference in terms of the shit you take? Might as well say fuck it and go all the way. 24 hour ban, week ban, whatever.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Tuesday that her husband made a failed attempt at humor last week when he asked a boat contractor whether his status as Michigan's "First Gentleman" would help him get his boat in the water ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

"He thought it might get a laugh," Whitmer said of her husband, dentist Marc Mallory.

"It didn't, and to be honest I wasn't laughing either when it was relayed to me because I knew how it would be perceived."

She said the controversy was the result of "a failed attempt at humor."

Whitmer said her husband regrets what he said and she called on Michiganders to show kindness and empathy as the state deals with the COVID-19 pandemic that will be around for some time.

Earlier, Whitmer's office would not comment on whether Mallory cited his unique status when he contacted NorthShore Dock LLC, north of Traverse City, before the Memorial Day holiday.

"We’re not going to make it a practice of addressing every rumor that is spread online," Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown said Monday.

State Sen. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, said Monday that he felt he unknowingly became part of a cover-up of the incident, having removed his Facebook post about the incident Friday night after officials in Whitmer's office reached out to him through the Senate Republican leader's office to say the allegations made by an owner of the boat company were untrue.

BIPARTISAN!!!!

https://twitter.com/JRubinBlogger/status/1265673107823616000

Quote
During the campaign, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) urged Twitter to kick Trump off its site, at the time I thought that was frivolous and unwise. Now I’ve come to the conclusion her proposal does not go far enough. Twitter has monetized hate speech, misinformation and other forms of speech that legitimate media do not propagate because they fear being sued. Twitter’s financial success depends on maximizing users; it hurts its bottom line to remove thousands (maybe millions) of users whose tweets do not manage to abide by Twitter’s terms of service. The problem is not only Trump but the legal cocoon in which Twitter and other social media companies are allowed to operate. (Worse, Twitter purveys terms of service that it does not enforce, in effect falsely advertising itself as a responsible actor.)

Taxpayers, by extending protection from liability to Twitter, subsidize a morally reprehensible business model. Taking away the protection is not censorship of Twitter; it is leveling of the playing field that works not only to shield Twitter from legal responsibility but, because of that exemption, promotes the worst misinformation and hate speech in the media universe.

The retort to holding Twitter accountable for policing itself is that Twitter becomes a “censor," conveniently forgetting that Twitter claims to be a private company (not a regulated utility). That does not fly. Twitter should not to be confused with a government entity that could not legally remove objectionable speech on Twitter.

Well, the argument goes, how would Twitter decide which of Trump’s tweets to block or which user to banish? Let’s not overthink this. Let Twitter operate by the same rules as traditional media. No more protection from lawsuits. Let Twitter figure out which tweets it wants to be legally responsible for and which will leave it open to legal attack. In the nongovernmental sector, it should bear the badge of purveyor of hate speech from groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. Surely, this is something on which both the left and right can agree.

Like it won't just become more polarized anyways.  You can't have a president who can't tell a truth and not become more polarized.

How in the world would Trump "shut down" social media companies?  Under what legal authority?

His twitter cronies keep referencing "Section 230", but it seems that section of the communications decency act only covers platforms from being legally held responsible for the content that they host.

eliminating Section 230 has been a long term bipartisan goal, from this January:
Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden called for the internet industry’s sweeping legal immunity over user-generated content to be “immediately” removed in an interview published today, escalating the political attacks on a much-debated segment of internet law that companies are already fighting to defend.

During an interview with The New York Times editorial board, Biden singled out Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg as targets that should be “submitted to civil liability” over posts on the social network. He lashed out at the tech giant and its chief for “propagating falsehoods they know to be false.”

The former vice president said Facebook and other companies should no longer receive protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the 1996 law that shields digital services firms from lawsuits over user posts and over good faith efforts to remove harmful material.

"It should be revoked. It should be revoked because [Facebook] is not merely an internet company," Biden said, adding that the social network should be subject to the same legal scrutiny as news organizations.

The comments mark the first time a 2020 presidential candidate has called for the liability shield to be struck down. In November, Biden said “we should be considering taking away” Section 230, and several other 2020 candidates have called for the statute to be reworked.

Even if Section 230 were removed, that doesn't suddenly make Twitter in violation of any known law for adding context to Trumps moronic tweets. They can censor anyone they want (they didn't in Trumps case), it's their platform.

That's the thing. If Twitter can suddenly be legally liable for the content that is posted on their site, Trump will almost assuredly lose his ability to post there. They would have more to lose by letting people like him stay on the platform.
