Im pretty sure everyone warned him that Bolton was a warmonger. Its funny that Trump doesnt want wars but hes mostly happy in showing "strenght" through military.

Another case of Trump getting credit for stymieing the mess he helped create in the first place. Never fails.

Pretty much. According to all the articles Mattis outright ignored him and his advisers when they kept asking him for military options. Which is really something when Mattis is the dove of the bunch.

Perhaps he was the one that wrote that anonymous NYT op-ed

Mattis's most important contribution was telling Trump that the US shouldn't torture and kill the families of ISIS.
He prevented Trump from having Ramsay Bolton dungeons in Washington.

I really dunno about this Harvard poll: https://harvardharrispoll.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/HHP_April2019_RV_crosstab.pdf

They can't mean this table, the other one that they say isn't the right one and has Hillary Clinton and Bloomberg has to be the right one. (Biden 34, Sanders 17, O'Rourke 8, Clinton 6, Booker 5, Buttigieg 4, Harris 4, Warren 3, Yang 2, Bloomberg 2, Klobuchar 1, Hickenlooper 1, Delaney 1, Ryan 1)

Though they did ask a couple of neat questions, one they asked Republican/Leans if they supported Trump or The Party more, 45% said Trump, 27% said The Party.

The other they asked both GOP and Dems to identify what "type" they are which is fun (they could pick up to three, first % is first choice, parenthesis is total)
Quote from: Republicans
Conservative ... 19% ... (46%)
Trump Republican ... 18% ... (40%)

He’s late again.

Mayor de Blasio will jump into the 2020 presidential race next week, according to four people with knowledge of his plans, entering a crowded field of 21 other Democratic hopefuls and two Republicans — dead last.

The 2020 kickoff could come as early as de Blasio’s birthday on Wednesday, when he’ll turn 58, two sources said.

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/rubycramer/dnc-voter-file-2020-campaigns
Quote
Presidential campaigns seeking to gain access to the Democratic Party 50-state voter file, a crucial database that costs $175,000 to purchase, must also agree to a strict set of terms requiring candidates to raise money for the Democratic National Committee.

Across the field of 22 candidates, some Democrats view the conditions as overly restrictive for a resource that presidential campaigns rely on daily as a foundation for everything from field organizing to analytics. The terms — meant to help strengthen the DNC ahead of the general election in support of the eventual nominee — are costly, time-consuming, and specific.

The voter file contains pools of data about millions of voters. Campaigns use the database as a foundation for their own data as they identify and track support over time within their own portals.

In addition to the $175,000 price tag on the voter file, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by BuzzFeed News, candidates who purchase the voter file must also agree to appear at one or more DNC fundraising events every three months during the duration of their bid for the nomination. At each fundraising event appearance — dubbed "signature event(s)" in the term sheet — candidates will also be asked to record a short video in support of the DNC.

Campaigns must also sign at least one DNC fundraising email every three months, with donations split evenly between the campaign and the DNC. Separate from the emails to the DNC’s list, campaigns will also participate in a party-wide fundraising day, slated for Aug. 7, 2019, sending an email to their own list. Those donations would also be split equally.

According to the term sheet, candidates who use the voter file will continue raising money for the party even after they drop out of the race, sending three additional emails to the DNC list before Election Day in 2020.

The so-called DNC "signature events" will range from grassroots fundraisers to “engagement events” like the party’s Women’s Leadership Forum or “I Will Vote Gala” last year — but all will benefit the DNC financially, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Quote
Sanders, the longtime Vermont Independent whose first presidential campaign fought bitterly with the party establishment and famously sued the DNC during a dispute over the voter file in late 2015, has not yet agreed to the DNC conditions, two people close to his campaign said.

The 2015 clash began when multiple Sanders aides were caught taking advantage of a glitch in the DNC’s voter software, allowing them to access proprietary Clinton data. In response, the DNC chair at the time, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, temporarily blocked Sanders from using the voter file. About a month away from the Iowa caucuses — the first contest in the Democratic nominating process — the Sanders camp accused the DNC of deliberate sabotage.

Let them underestimate you. Then you win.

Biden is the 2008 Hillary of 2020. If not that, I fear he'll be the 2016 Hillary of 2020. :doge

If the Dems pick Biden I think it will be a close race. Also will likely end up with the worst possible pick for VP.

There was an article on Politico, The Hill or one of those sites where a bunch of Republican senators went on record on how bad the nominees were recently the White House was picking because McConnell said the usual back channel stuff wasn't been listened to.

They're been scrapping the bottom of the barrel with nominees because the turnover rate is all sorts of amazing for an administration at this point for cabinet positions. Just take the example of UN ambassador, they had to downgrade the position to a non-cabinet position to try to fill it with a person who didn't have the experience necessary (Nauert) and they still hasn't been able to fill the position. They just found the replacement for Nikki Haley with Kelly Kraft, the current U.S. ambassador to Canada and a major GOP donor and coal magnate. Why the heck did that take months to do other than Trump or his administration just not caring about any of this shit.

Considering how much Trump ran against the Bush legacy and was meant to represent a change in the GOP, we got Stephen Moore, John Bolton, a tax cut aimed at the rich, and a failed coup in Venezuela. His administration's a tribute band at this point.

The other day I responded to a cold call political survey for a local election that was as much about national issues as it was local issues because that's political life in the U.S. After what one could charitably describe as benjipwnsian behavior on my part for most of the questions (e.g. "Do you strongly support, support, oppose, or strongly oppose building a wall at the U.S. - Mexico border?" "There already is a wall at the U.S. - Mexico border.") the interviewer asked me if I identified as liberal or Democrat; conservative or Republican; centrist; or socialist or democratic socialist.

My initial (internal) response was "Hello, officer!" followed by "Did you just liken social fascists and socialists? SMH" then I acted like none of these labels applied to me even though I had used the phrase "uneven and combined development" earlier in the survey when asked how I felt about the direction Orange County had been taking. Eventually the interviewer let me identify as an undecided voter so that we could move things along and wrap up.

Anyway, never thought I'd be asked if I was a socialist in a relatively tepid* U.S. local political survey, either things really are shifting or the feds are closing in on me. Probably both!

*On the U.S. political scale. I doubt being asked how I felt about guns, the death penalty, et cetera would qualify as a tepid survey in less benighted lands.

If Warren gets traction during the primaries, someone's going to resurface stories about how her bankruptcy research was "debunked" by a study that (IIRC) only counted hospital bills as medical expenses, excluding prescription medications, lost wages from illness, etc.

Exempting primary residences from the estate tax would decrease the number of estate tax returns; those and stocks are historically the assets that trigger a filing obligation, well at least before the current obscene exemption amount.

I'm not sure what he's on about when he says, "The government also must . . . close the loopholes that allow the very wealthy to pass on their financial portfolios to their children with no tax on capital gains." I'm guessing the stepped up basis in inherited assets? You can't tax inherited assets without stepping up their basis, it's an accounting absurdity.

I’m guessing he is talking about stepping up their basis, but does he mean that inheritors should pay taxes on the stepped up part of that basis or that they just shouldn’t get the tax breaks from the stepped up basis that they currently get when selling those assets

Frankly when you think about it for more than 2 minutes... all of the capital gains exceptions  are just huge subsidies to the wealthy.

A crowd broke out into chants of "PowerPoint, PowerPoint, PowerPoint," at Democratic presidential hopeful and entrepreneur Andrew Yang's latest Seattle rally last week.

The chant broke out during a Friday rally at Gas Works Park in Seattle. Yang was reiterating his promise to become the first president to use PowerPoint in the State of the Union address when the audience responded by repeating "PowerPoint," according to GeekWire.

"I'm going to be the first president to use PowerPoint at the State of the Union, how do you feel about that?" Yang said. "Yes, this is the nerdiest presidential campaign in history!"

Yang is one of many contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination and faces an uphill battle in the primary.
