Concerned with the left wing appeals to material conditions wrapped up in yeehaw rhetoric. Tucker Carlson's really ghostwriting for a lotta dudes in the game rn.

I do like Tucker shaking up right wing rhetoric a bit, less corporate ballwashing.
Like that tuition (IIRC) segment of his, had the obligatory inclusion of random climate change dragging as is the GOP hallmark.

Can't say I always agree, but maybe we can stave off being Bezos's Bitches or whatever

"We can appeal to the racists, and our ideas are so obviously superior they'll eventually see the light."

That was basically the Goldwater/WFB/Reagan plan for the GOP and that went just swimmingly.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
"That's different, they were appealing to ideological concepts of individualism and property rights, whereas we are addressing people's actual material concerns!"

If you think that will automatically win the day in the context of American politics...

I love how the Southern Strategy narrative leaves out the fact that Democrats ran the South from the 40's to 80's, yet it was basically frozen in time (economically and outcomes for education and health). Upward mobility was only achieved by physically moving your family to the Northern or Western states.

Then after watching generations of these promises and programs all fail to improve your region, the people decide to vote a different way and the response is "those were the racists responding to Republican dog whistles".

Then after watching generations of these promises and programs all fail to improve your region, the people decide to vote a different way and the response is "those were the racists responding to Republican dog whistles".

If it was about local stewardship of the economy, that would bring up a few questions:

1) Why did they replace economically conservative Democrats with economically conservative Republicans?

2) Why did only southern whites shift to the GOP while southern blacks vote overwhelmingly Democratic?

3) Why would southern whites vote for Republicans for federal office before they would for local office? Alabama and Mississippi didn't see the statehouses change over until the wave election in 2010, and it's hard to think that George W. Bush's track record with the economy is what won them over.

4) Why was this shift so dramatic among white southerners and not replicated elsewhere? Why hasn't the same thing happened in reverse in Kansas, for example?

Someone just said on the Wapo stream that if Congress doesn't impeach Trump, he will falsely claim he was exonerated and it will help him during the election. If the House does its job and impeaches Trump but the Senate won't convict him, then voters may rethink who should be sitting in the Senate and no just who should be President.

you probably should have read how to think about this before it happened too: https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2019/07/24/how-to-think-about-todays-mueller-extravaganza-461020

06:07 AM EDT

THERE’S NO WAY to adequately encapsulate the gravity of today’s pair of hearings with ROBERT MUELLER. They’re absolutely huge politically, substantively and optically. In a presidency filled with “moments,” this is one that could surpass them all. …

… OR NOT. If we know anything about Robert Mueller III, it’s that he has stuck to the book for most of his career, and all indications point to the fact that he intends to do so again.

THE REACTION to the former special counsel’s testimony will be divided sharply along party lines. That’s the nature of politics in 2019, and it’s especially true of big moments like this.

AND THE REALITY IS, the hearing will likely enforce and bolster every member of Congress’ gut instinct: If you favor impeachment but haven’t yet said so, this gives you the opportunity to come out. If you think impeachment is wrongheaded, today will probably allow you to stay against it.

MUELLER’S DAY begins in Rayburn 2141 at 8:30 a.m. HOUSE JUDICIARY is up first, and then HOUSE INTELLIGENCE. Judiciary is expected to last three hours -- roughly -- and Intel around two, or so. It should all be over by mid- to late afternoon.

Here are some of today’s best Mueller stories:

Biden maintained his primary lead by posting strong showings among key demographics for his campaign, including older voters and African Americans.

Biden gets the highest support among voters aged 45-64 with 29 percent and voters aged 65 and older with 43 percent. He also gets the support of 46 percent of black voters, while no other candidate breaks double digits with that demographic group.

Biden is also the first choice for both male and female voters, getting 25 percent support from each group.
times a ticking on your chances to start dropping out losers, we need to get this down to the three front runners ASAP: Biden, Buttigieg and Beto

also time to up that third debate criteria to 3% (rounded up) as Yang just moved past Booker and is moving in on hitting both criteria again

thinking we may also have to start really looking into some way we can start eliminating all these failed candidates but the presumptive nominee by November 2019 to make it easier for the media to focus in on his anti-Trump message

oh look the skin-crawling cry-babies being so petty that they refuse to drop out despite having lost so they're lashing out against the last line of defense for democracy: https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-war-between-bernie-sanders-and-msnbc-reaches-a-new-peak
Quote
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and MSNBC have always had a complicated relationship. Sanders, a top-tier contender for the Democratic nomination, has long questioned the news media’s biases, while pundits have taken fresh shots at the Vermont senator this cycle. But officials in Sanders’ campaign contend that leading up to the 2020 election, the network is one of several cable news outlets directly contributing to a media climate where false claims go unchecked and requests for progressive voices on-air are frequently turned down.

“More often than not these commentators are injecting their opinion without any policy discussions,” Nina Turner, the national co-chair of Sanders’ campaign, told The Daily Beast. “They’re not there to tell the gospel truth.”

The backlash from Sanders-world reached a new high on Sunday, when MSNBC analyst Mimi Rocah, a former assistant U.S attorney for the Southern District of New York and occasional contributor to The Daily Beast, launched a personal critique of Sanders during a segment with host David Gura, saying that he makes her “skin crawl” and that he’s not a “pro-woman candidate.”
Quote
“It doesn’t even have to be ‘rah rah rah, Bernie Sanders!’” Turner said, pointing to Zerlina Maxwell, an MSNBC political analyst and former official on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign who shared the segment with Rocah. “Just someone who would push back.”

After the segment aired, Turner personally asked women to share stories detailing why they support Sanders, saying that while she wasn’t surprised in the volume of responses she received, the depth of personal accounts women chose to divulge connected to Sanders’ policy platform was compelling.

“Their voices matter just as much as Mimi’s,” Turner said. “They may not have a platform on MSNBC, but their voices matter.”

A spokesperson for MSNBC seemed to dismiss the campaign’s claims, without mentioning Sanders by name. “A presidential campaign complaining about tough questions and commentary speaks for itself,” the spokesperson said. “Our anchors and analysts are doing their jobs: discussing day-to-day developments that have an impact on the race.”
Quote
A recent Morning Consult poll found that Fox News viewers are more likely to support Sanders than those who prefer to watch MSNBC. According to the survey, 22 percent of Fox News viewers who identified as possible Democratic primary voters said they would back Sanders, as opposed to 13 percent of MSNBC viewers.

[benji's note: I'm going to use a lazy cable news version of "socialism" here merely for simplicity's sake, I know you'll all know the intricate differences and subconsciously insert them as you're reading.]

I've often found Skin-Crawling Bernard's socialism to be of a less aggressive*, less authoritarian and even less socialist style than when otherwise mainstream Democrats who absolutely reject the label or would only be described as such by GOP candidates/media/etc. start describing the policies they'd like to implement. Like when Kennedy was challenging Carter over inflation his plan was to establish a new federal government agency to set national wages, prices, dividends, interest rates, rent, etc.  and he was already there when wanting to eliminate private health insurance and care to replace it with a NHS system. That was nearly 40 years ago. There's obviously way better examples but I had that one in the ol noggin and serves well enough to illustrate my point. Hell, Trump probably has lots of examples himself.
