Despite everything, Trump' approval rating continues to rise. 45.8% approve of Trump.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

That's nuts.

"Every country has the government it deserves."
Joseph de Maistre
They're lagging due to the model, he already hit a record peak and started dropping on RCP which doesn't do any modeling. I think the daily briefings have hit their high and will start not being a positive anymore, he needs to pair back his appearances to once a week or so. Do weekly sum-up appearances and then appear if there's "big news" of some kind, otherwise turn them over to Pence and crew. Once we've clearly hit the flattening of the curve he definitely shouldn't be doing them every day. From the snippets I've watched I can't tell if he actually likes doing them or just doesn't like the reason he's doing them.

The three months of 2020 have actually been Trump's best approval average of his Presidency, even his first three months in office weren't this good. The end of March, start of April spike put him two points above his inauguration average which is generally when Presidents, outside of a crisis, have their best approval. Obama never got higher than his inauguration bumps IIRC. He's also improving in the head to heads.

A coronation attempt for Biden followed by a shutting down of the primaries as Trump appears everywhere was definitely not good for the D's even if Trump has bumbled around it still elevates him. The Virtual Biden campaign thing is never going to work. I really don't know what they do at this point, it'll be fun to see a scramble election that's more like everybody else's short-term campaign periods, everything is built around the permanent campaign here. Might as well just McGovern Bernie at this point as much as pin any hopes to Joe.

Will I have to refund the money if my income rises? And will I owe taxes on it?

No, according to tax experts. Technically, the stimulus checks are tax credits advanced from your 2020 tax return. They are similar to other refundable tax credits, like the child tax credit, which aren't considered income and which aren't taxable.

Well it's an advance on next year's tax return based on a one-time $1200 refundable credit. You're not going to have to pay it back, it's just being administered that way cause the US welfare state is dumb and the IRS already has an infrastructure for paying people money.

Bernie couldn't take down Biden or Hillary, what could he do against Trump?
Also imagine it digitally, the volume adjustments you'd need if those two get in a heated argument.  >:(

This assumes that the candidate that makes it out of the primary is the one that's the best counter to Trump, when the truth is that the processes we have are designed to shit out these great unifier compromise candidates that have such major issues that it makes Trump look good by comparison to the layman

I hope I'm wrong, but my understanding is that when I do 2020 taxes next year the refund is going to be $2900 less because I was already given the money.

What the "advanced tax credit" means is that for tax purposes corona bucks are considered a reduction in the amount of taxes you owe for 2020 [free money, in other words], that is being paid out now rather than requiring you to wait until next year to include on your tax return forms. It is not taxed, does not need to be paid back, and won't impact how much you owe on your 2020 tax return.

I think the "refundable" part is throwing some people off because it sounds like you have to pay it back. When what it really means is that even if the tax credit brings your taxes owed below $0, the government pays you.

People are so desperate to feel that someone is in charge during a time of crisis.

All he'd have to do is go through the motions of being president and he'd be at 70% approval with fawning news coverage. Almost impressive that he can't even meet that low bar.

I think is more impressive how less than a half of the US population are willing accept disaster because a misplaced social revanchist mentality. At what point it stops being politics and just simple misanthropic self delusion?

I would say the only country that handled this really well is South Korea and to a lesser extend Germany.
Most other countries utterly failed including those with widely praised healthcare systems such as the UK.

It all starts and ends with the recommendations from the WHO. They didn't send severe warnings fast enough but that's also because China kept people in the dark.
It could've been better without Trump but also it could've been worse. Would Pence or Clinton have shutdown Chinese and European air travel as early as he did?
Would state and local governments have acted any different? I highly doubt that.

Trump has now mixed his own popularity, ego and TV ratings with the corona virus response which may well be the saving grace because it is the only thing he actually cares about.
The biggest danger really is opening up again too early, that I think is going to decide if this will be an unmitigated disaster or not much different from the outcome in other countries.

Are we going to talk about the INSANE state and federal supreme court rulings today?

People are trying to NOT DIE and the courts won't let them extend the election or allow people extra time to vote from home. I feel like I'm living in a nightmare

non-voters vindicated once again. :klob

You might think that posting on the same board as benji would make you pick up one piece of advice or two.
