But you guys in DC "liked that"  ???

I agree that the governer has done her part of controlling Covid quite well, but these people I'm talking about are angry with her over masks and not opening up and whatnot. The hopelessly pig headed ones. So I'm glad Snyder has spoken on the election cause they might listen to him due to being on their political "team".

I feel good about Michigan. Things could change but the governor's response to Covid has clearly worked, and the sec of state is going to ensure every vote is counted. I see people saying that mail-in ballots are going to dominate the rolls in multiple states but honestly, after seeing what we saw in the primaries...I think people are going to come out and vote in-person too, in massive numbers. For both candidates.

Like in the Michigan primary for instance, Biden got nearly 250k more votes than Hillary or Bernie did in 2016. Lots of people are going to vote. I just hope those that vote via mail turn their shit in early...

https://news.stonybrook.edu/facultystaff/maverick-modeller-helmut-norpoth-predicts-another-win-for-trump/

Quote
“When I looked at New Hampshire and I saw that Donald Trump got 85 percent of the votes, and the closest challenger was Bill Weld at 10 percent, I was pretty sure what the model was going to predict,” he said. “If Trump had gotten only 55 percent and an opponent had gotten 40 percent, I may not have predicted that Donald Trump would have a chance to win. Maybe. It would depend on the other side as well.”

As for the Democrats, Norpoth said that the sheer number of candidates and the inability of any one of them to get off to a fast start may have doomed the party from the start.

“People have forgotten how Joe Biden did in New Hampshire,” said Norpoth. “He was terrible. He got 8.4 percent of the vote, which is unbelievable for a candidate with any aspirations of being president.”

Odd qualifications. Does his model predict what happens in a once in a century pandemic?

“My first forecast was the 1996 election, the one where Bill Clinton was re-elected for a second term,” he said. “Predicting a Clinton win was considered a stretch at the time because he was pretty bad in his first term.”

1996? Stretch?

https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/08/23/the-least-important-election-of-our-lives-400075

Quote
What was it about 1996? Start with the terrain. In 1996, America was a hotbed of … rest. The economy was in the best shape in decades: a jobless rate of just 5 percent, inflation under 3 percent, real growth at a more or less steady 2.5 percent and a budget that was approaching balanced—and on a clear path to future surpluses of several hundred billion dollars. A debate among economists was seriously focused on whether to eliminate the national debt entirely or keep it alive just for credit purposes. Abroad, Boris Yeltsin was winning reelection as president of Russia; Vladimir Putin was a relative unknown who had just moved to Moscow to assume the lofty position of deputy chief of the Presidential Property Management Department. Even terrorism wasn’t a front-burner issue: Al Qaeda’s attempt to bring down the World Trade Center Towers with a truck bomb in 1993 had ended in failure, and Osama Bin Laden was a name known to a relative handful of government officials.

Every election stat nerd I know of thinks this guy is completely full of shit.

If you look at his model, it predicted Trump would win the popular vote (excluding third parites) by almost 5%, when he lost it by 2%. His prediction was off by 7 percentage points and picked the wrong popular vote winner so after the fact he decided that the electoral college result meant it was actually right.

Up to 2016 he'd been counting 2000 as correct for his model because it picked the popular vote winner (Gore) instead of the EC winner. Actually, I'm pretty sure he was publicly counting both 2000 and 2016 as correct until he got called out for it.

Trump could win sure. But nothing last week or this week points in that direction, despite clear narrative pushes from the Beltway ("urban violence sinking Biden") and left ("the RNC was impressive/scary, Biden is in trouble"). Well we got a boat load of polling this week and overall, it points to...Biden still leading big, including in Michigan and other battlegrounds. Anything can happen. But right now? Biden is clearly winning.

Hard to run on law & order when you're the president and all the violence is happening while you're president. If Obama was president right now, all this stuff was happening and Trump+Biden were running to replace him...sure, I'd get the strategy. But the president pointing to violence and saying "this is what America will look like if the other guy wins"...?

John McCain got shot down bombing children in villages, voted for horrible things, wrote a song about bombing Iran, made a fool out of himself during the financial crisis to a point that it annoyed G.W. , picked Palin as a running mate and gave the tea party legitimacy. Afterwards he allied himself with literally the worst opposition groups you could imagine breaking bread with Nazi's in Ukraine and radical terrorists in the Middle East.

I don't know how else to describe John McLoser  :shaq2

Even for those of us who are all too wearily familiar with President Donald Trump’s disdain for journalists, his administration’s latest attack on the free press is a bit of a jaw-dropper.

In a heretofore unpublicized recent memo, the Pentagon delivered an order to shutter Stars and Stripes, a newspaper that has been a lifeline and a voice for American troops since the Civil War. The memo orders the publisher of the news organization (which now publishes online as well as in print) to present a plan that “dissolves the Stars and Stripes” by Sept. 15  including "specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space worldwide.”

And all of America's men and women couldn't put America back together again.

I guess some of the quotes are "new" but there was already a news cycle where he didn't visit the graveyard in France and got criticized, and after that stories about him yelling at his aides because nobody told him it would be bad publicity.

Also pretty sure the WH flag was lowered, raised, and re-lowered after McCain died, too.

This is one of those things they can use to drive a wedge between Trump and his White House/campaign team.
They spend half a day claiming he didn't say those things, probably got him to tweet out something 'respectful' about McCain or had Scavino do it.
Obviously that didn't work, so Trump uses the one button he knows always works for him: double down.

So now he insulted McCain, the veterans, John Kelly and the reporters for good measure.

The Atlantic coresponded was followed by CNN's MJ Lee, who focused on remarks made by Trump made at a Thursday campaign rally that mocked Biden for his constant mask-wearing.

"I wonder if you worry that this kind of language that comes from the president of the United States can deter some Americans who are tuning into him to not wear masks," Lee told the former VP.

CBS News correspondent Ed O'Keefe squeezed in two questions for Biden, the first of which asked what the former vice president thought of Trump's supposed suggestion to voters that they should vote both by mail and in-person. The second question asked why Biden wasn't "angrier" at Trump's reported comments about the fallen soldiers.

What hard question are they going to ask Biden in this context? Also, not all questions are meant to be hard ball. Journalists have also played soft ball with Trump and he lashes out calling them biased liberal media questions. I'll watch the press conference but I'm naturally cynical of conservative outrage.

I don't care if journalists have been pussies around trump.  Maybe they should stop being pussies(sorry if that's gendered).

Reporters all want reaction quotes to the story of the day. If Trump told Mnuchin to get a deal done and signed a stimulus bill they'd be asking Biden about Trump's bipartisan leadership.

Instead he wanted to spend a French holiday watching Fox News on satellite so they're asking about how Trump hates the troops.

Why would the they use hard questions?

Cause they're supposed to be journalists.

It was the topic of the day and primarily why Biden called a press conference. What is up your butt?

I'm tired of Biden being soft balled.

That's the state of American journalism. Rather than simple follow up questions, they self fellate themselves about FACT CHECKS. They buddy up to power rather than hold it accountable. It's telling when the best interview with Trump is with a non-American. That should tell you something, but instead you're overreacting by acting like there's bias for Biden when the press gave Trump softball questions without follow up questions in 2016.

How come you’re so aware of the firmness of Biden’s genitals?  :curious
