Give me some Podcast suggestions!

Hardcore History Obviously very popular and sadly not updated often but Carlin has a good way of telling history (even with his flaws) but keeping it entertaining

Radiolab Good for your junk science needs

Serial Good if you don't like having an ending to your story

The WWII History Podcast (Ray Harris) I don't know what to think about this one. On one hand he's very thorough. On the other hand he's very thorough and that can get seriously boring. I think there's something like 170+ episodes. I got to about 60. Where he's not doing a day by day slog through some battle and is instead keeping things at an appropriately high level it's really rather good. I stopped because he was just so deep in minutiae that it was boring. This was right after he spent 19 episodes on July to early September 1940 where he'd literally talk about each day, and the air battles that day and what happened along with a tally of losses at the end of every day. Some might like that level of detail but it was too much for me. It didn't start off that way though. The first few episodes where thorough but not exhaustive. After this section of episodes it looked like he wasn't going back to summing things up. Again, some might like the level of detail. I just can't.

The Mystery Show Sadly cancelled after the first season (only 6 episodes) this was a really fun/quirky podcast where a reporter goes out and tries to solve inconsequential mysteries. A lot of fun. I was really disappointed when I found out it got cancelled after the first season.

Revolutions A good history podcast, not too detailed while not being too high level

I got a lot. Here's some:

True Crime stuff:

Sword and Scale - high production value podcast. Goes over a specific cases. Uses court and news audio inter-cut with police interviews and narration to detail the events. It's a very well made podcast about true crime. Runtime 1 hour
Generation Why - this one is a little more basic. it's just two guys discussing true crime cases (and sometimes paranormal stuff). They go back and forth explaining the case. It's fairly basic but it's a good listen. Runtime 1.5 hours
Criminal - This is more of an interview focused podcast. The host talks with a victim of a crime and discusses the various aspects. Runtime 20-30 minutes
Detective - Similar to Criminal, except they talk to cops. Runtime 20-30 minutes

Video game stuff:

Giant Bombcast - it's the Giant Bomb West guys. They talk about what they've been playing, the current news of games, and read listener emails. Runtime 2.5-3 hours
Giant Beastcast - it's the Giant Bomb East guys plus a guy from CNet. Similar to the Bombcast but they move between what they've been playing and news a little more fluidly. They also have a corrections section Runtime 1.5-2 hours
Retronauts - This was an old 1up podcast that's now it's own thing. Various video game journos talk about old games/game systems. Usually every episode is dedicated to a specific topic and they explain it's history. Runtime 1-1.5 hours
Waypoint Radio - this is Vice's new gaming website. Former Giant Bomb guys Austin Walker and Patrick Klepek and some new faces. It tried to be a little more nuanced in discussion about topics. Succeeds most of the time. Ruintime 45minutes-1hour

Hardcore History is great, and his other show Common Sense is fantastic as well. I also like American Life and Radio Lab, but the ones that are a bit less known:

The Last Podcast On The Left is easily my favorite podcast out there. Their themes ranges from serial killers, to hilarious conspiracies. It's all done with great humor and just a good take on things. They do real research but often with a funny angle to it all. I would recommend starting with a heavy hitter like Manson or Dahmer.

The other shows on the network that got last podcast, like roundtable of gentlemen, abe lincons top hat and brighter side are also good.

99% invisible it focuses on design and architecture, which sounds boring, but it's not. Trust me.

Criminal Very good podcast. I wish they would release more frequently and longer episodes, but it's really good.

Designer notes A podcast that is just a bunch of really long in depth interviews with game designers. Sid meier and Amy Hennig ones are particuarly good.

You are not so smart podcast. Basically just goes down a long list of fallacies and other dumb shit you tell yourself.

Sword and Scale can be decent, but the narrator annoys me to death. His constant whining about JUSTICE, and begging for donations, for what is really just him talking a bit of shit and then putting in interesting clips from youtube, is extremely annoying. But he often has some interesting topics and the clips that he eventually gets to, after crying about JUSTICE FOR THE FAMILIES AND VICTIMS, can be really good.

I'm veering wildly back toward my tabletop RPG origins, so if you used to play D&D or Traveler, you might like this:
http://www.happyjacks.org
They have audio podcasts, and recently started doing live video broadcasting on Twitch as well. They started as a DM/GM advice podcast, then moved into Actual Plays for their campaigns. I really enjoy their Vampire the Masquerade AP. Disclosure: the main dude, Stu, is a friend of mine from college and part of my original GURPS group. /nerd

http://www.kenandrobintalkaboutstuff.com
KARTAS is also largely about RPGs, but has plenty of sections on books, film-festival movies, history, and food. Kenneth Hite is what happens if you stuff Tim Powers into a role-playing author instead of a novelist. The man is a walking library of weird knowledge, and only his steadfast skepticism keeps the trove of coincidences from becoming a full on conspiracy web. Robin D. Laws is the guy who wrote the GUMSHOE system and Hamlet's Hitpoints, which is core to 2nd (3rd?) wave RPGs where storytelling becomes core to roleplaying instead of the standard wargaming mechanics carrying over.

Here's the thing

Alec Baldwin interviews famous people/politicuans and goes beyond your usual US tv type interview. Only heard two podcasts so far but I like it a lot (Viggo Mortensen and Michael Stipe).

Arsecast

The best (only?) Arsenal podcast, listen to this every week. On friday its pre game banter and euro game recap, on monday recap of the weekend game.

Foreign Policy Editor's Roundtable : Debated in the US politics thread. Insightful, short & synthetic on complex issues. David Rothkopf is a great host and there's just enough polite banter for the thing to not be too dry. Mainly focused on US foreign policy and world events.

Idle Thumbs Network : Designer Notes has already been mentioned and I second it. I also like
- 3 Moves Ahead : Strategy game (computer & board) discussions with Rob Zacny, Troy Goodfellow & Dr. Bruce Geryk. The latter often has good interviews with board game designers.
- Idle Weekend : Videogame podcast with Rob Zacny and Danielle Riendeau (also at Waypoint now). It's a laid back podcast with a social conscience and I find Rob & Danielle to be sensitive & smart people. Trigger warning : Danielle is probably the type to be dubbed a "SJW".
- Idle Thumbs : VG podcast but from a mostly dev perspective (that's the dudes behind Firewatch) so they're not always thorough in submitting to the news.

Quote
Revolutions A good history podcast, not too detailed while not being too high level

Seconded, though I'd say it's a fairly detailed podcast as far as retelling the events go. It's a bit low on explaining and analysis.

For electronic music : Beats in Space, FACT Mixes, XL8LR podcasts. Some decent stuff on Resident Advisor too.

Norm Macdonald Live

Funniest podcast I've listened to (never bothered with the videos), but it's dead for now and most of the content is from 2013/14. Still worth going through IMO, and even when I thought a particular guest wouldn't be interesting Norm makes it worthwhile by goading them to tell some pretty memorable stories--be it truly heinous shit or interesting insights into the industry.

He put out 3 episodes in August/September, and I thought he was doing more but then his book came out and nothing's dropped since.

Love how he constantly shits on his advertisers too:

Crimetown is the new one from Gimlet Media (the same ones behind The Mystery Show).  It's like Serial meets Goodfellas.  There's only a handful of episodes out right now but it's pretty fucking amazing to listen to.  I think it's the #1 podcast on the appstore now.

Last Podcast On The Left is just balls out hilarious.  Take the morbid content from Sword & Scale but strip away all the pretentiousness and add a heavy dose of Henry Zebrowski's lunacy.  By far one of my favorite podcasts out there.

History of English

History and linguistics starting with the original Indo-European language and working from there. I'm on episode 20 and there just getting to the Anglo-Saxons (old English)

It has etymologies for days, very interesting. Also really helps to make sense of the hodge-podge of a language.

Gimlet's stuff is consistently rather good.
Still on history of Rome, about 143 episodes in, I think there's 30 more or something. After that I gotta get to that Hardcore History one (btw, my favorite one was the one about the Anabaptists, when he takes small scope stuff and goes in dept he's at his best). I hear that Missing Richard Simmons or something like that, is supposed to be pretty good too.

I used to really like The Final Level podcast with Ice-T, maybe it's a bit dated now because he would talk about what was in the news that week, and recent movies/videogames releases, but the two thirds of each show was dedicated to interviews with really interesting people.  people from the music industry, comedians, stand up artists (There's an episode with Chris Rock), and lesser known people like club owners from the late '70 and early '80 with tons of stories about how it was back in the days. He even interviews super oldschool early rap artists that were kinda forgotten by time, so it's great stuff. He stopped doing them last year because he was working on bodycount album and he just had a new kid but I really hope that he's going to return one day.

He would also talk a lot about his movie/tv making experience and it was always bullshit free.

It's really interesting stuff, and Ice-T and his co-host Mick are hilarious.

I used to enjoy How did this get made about b-moveis but I started to get turned off after a while because it was obvious that sometimes some of the hosts (Even the main guy) had never really watched the movie or had just seen scenes on youtube, because they would get basic story line stuff completely wrong. The show kinda degenerated into a vanity thing for the main host and quality went down.

I really want to get into those history podcasts but man is the delivery in some of them soooo dry. I feel like I'm back in class.

I never really felt this from the show. . .but then again I only listen to the episodes that interest me, which is probably about 50% of them.

Revolutions A good history podcast, not too detailed while not being too high level

Been listening to this (the french revolution episodes to be specific) for the past 2 weeks on my commute. Thanks a lot for the recommend. Love this podcast

Is Cruncheons on archive.org ??? The borecast is up there

My favorite podcast these days is Talking Simpsons. They do a deep dive on each episode and get into excruciating detail about all the little jokes and reference on the show. It's a nice trip down memory lane and is filling in a lot of my 80s & 90s pop culture blind spots. Also, they've done two the Critic episodes :) I'm tempted to make this my first patreon to get the rest of the Critic episodes

I've been meaning to checkout the rest of the Laser Time podcasts
