Theres far better British comedy out there. Namely Black Books, Monty Python and Harry Enfield. Black Adder is OK but Red Dwarf is fairly appaling.

If anything I got tired of Monty real fucking fast. I guess I'll need to develop a snobby attitude towards british shows that get high exposure through public broadcasting in America to REALLY know whats what about BRITCOMS.

I haven't seen Black Books yet, but I daresay it has to be unimaginable if it is somehow better than the 2nd and 4th Black Adder seasons.  Red Dwarf is also a great show, but I think it's more a a scifi fan's show than anything.

Monty Python is definitely great, but much like Hitchcock's greats, it's difficult to not be reminded by the people that were inspired by Python and took the concepts to greater heights than the original series.  Also, a fair bit of it is very dated.

Very true. Monty Python more or less invented the modern day comedy we still use today and it being done and expanded over the past 30 years makes it hard to watch it just as a tv show. Watching and remembering that comedy before the show aired was I Love Lucy and "lol I threw a pie in your face isnt that funny" Variety Shows. It is truely mind blowing what type of comedy Python was when it apepared in the 60's. But in todays modern world it is hard to wrap your head around that making the show much less appealing. It still deserves it's title as the most important comedy in the history of television, but that doesn't mean its easily watchable anymore.

What I would recommend is the best sitcom to come outside of Britian(other than the Offce)

yeah, Monty Python is pretty hit or miss with me, now -- when I was a kid, they could do no wrong, but they've been seriously bettered by the last thirty years of British comedy.

Fawlty Towers, though, is still a riot. It set the tone and comedic pacing of the modern britcom, and we wouldn't have such hilariously dire and caustic characters like Edmund Blackadder or Bernard Black without the over-the-top misanthropy of Basil Fawlty.

Also, and fuck you fagaboos in advance, but I like Coupling. It's like Friends but, y'know, actually funny. And it's really mean. Any of Steve's whiny rants bashing women or justifying his perversion make me LOL.

Watching an episode of fawlty towers and just being in AWE of how a problem grows and grows and eventually implodes never ceases to be enjoying.

White Man make sure you buy it this weekend. The series is split over 3 separate releases or in one box set(the one I posted above).

How do you like Black Adder Back and Forth, MAF?

Remind me over the weekend and I will get the first 2 seasons of Red Dwarf to you.  The thing is, like 3-5 are the best seasons.  1 and 2 are still good stuff, though.

Back and Forth was good, I think what ruined a bit of it was how old everyone had become after 10 years. Sorta made me feel a little sad for the crew. I just finished watching BAII again, going to hop through III this weekend.

I liked almost all Red Dwarf I had seen on PBS. A good show is generally good the whole way through, even if its not the best season I can still enjoy it. Black Adder Season 1 for example. I liked it cause its fucking surreal.

Lister?  Come on, he was a total tool.  It's all about Rimmer.  I idolize Rimmer.

Also, the classic Young Ones episode Bambi has appearances from Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry (<3), Emma Thompson, and Young Ones/Black Adder writer Ben Elton.  This was in like 1982 before any of them were very popular.  They were YOUNG.
