Oh yeah, beat the game on Sunday. Gueess I should do a little review.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
GOTY along with BOTW. Same addictive Persona goodness. I liked (or at least found a positive trait) in all of the main cast, so I wouldn't say I hate anyone in the group. Ryuji is annoying, Yusuke is weird, Makoto Sae is bae, etc.

I think the main idea of the story - of how people are easily swayed by information and how certain information can mutate in order to serve sinister machinations is a great theme to tackle - but it was done so sloppily that I wish they had MGS2-esque Kojima to pen it.

The Akechi characterization in the end was garbo too. At least have him work alongside Yaldo in order to bring about the ordered world he desired instead of him turning into Daddy Issues Baby. Could have been a great one on one fight with the protag in the prison in order to revive the real Igor.

Played on Normal like a pleb but I felt like the battles were still too easy for the majority of the playthrough. Once you get the SP bands, you can pretty much reach the treasure within a day.

Otherwise, awesome stuff. Some of the dungeons were annoying - most particularly the Space Station. But I liked them for the most part. S-Links unlocking new mechanics was also a nice touch. Group dynamics outside of the main story could have used some work but otherwise good shit.

I get that it sucks that you can't share screenshots on the PS4, but are people really this shitty when it comes to taking photos with their phone?

Pretty much, yeah. :doge

Ryuji is like a dumb dog you need to keep on a short leash. He can be lovable in his stupidity and his enthusiasm is admirable.

Yosuke was just a shithead and sometimes a creep. He'd be the worst P4 character if not for Teddie.

Mishima is definitely the worst in P5 tho.

Mishima WAS the worst.

He isn't a bad or poorly written character though. He fulfilled his role and his dislikable traits were by design. It was also what set up Futaba ethering him into the abyss.

Mishima isn't that bad. :-\ I mean he got abused by Kamoshida, got abused by his "friends" in middle-school, is basically a shut-down social outcast. I feel for him because I've been there, truly.

He seemed unwilling to stand up for himself. It was more frustrating to watch than anything.

When I disliked Mishima for having those character traits it is only because I have some of the character traits myself but wish I didn't. Self hate and all that.

Nope, it's Haru. She's fine overall though, just doesn't matter.

Non main cast it's definitely Mishima and that drunk journalist bitch. Everybody else is great.

As one of the few Ohya stans in the world: :fbm

I get why people are turned off by her though, but I thought her confidant storyline was one of the best ones in the game (behind Kawakami and Tora)

Ohya had a good storyline. I thought about waifu'ing her, but if I was gonna go the cougar route I was going Kawakami or Tae.

Honestly, most of the non-party member confidants had better story arcs than your party members.

About 10 hours into P3, and I have to say, by comparison, the criticisms of P5 restricting your activities are on the fucking money. In P3, you can do an afternoon activity, an evening activity, and THEN still study as long as you're not tired. No cat cock blocking you from doing shit.

Also, there are only three social stats to increase in P3 compared to 5 in P5.

Restricting your activities so much was dumb. This was a huge fuck up game design wise; it's not fun and adds nothing.

There are a shit ton of real quality of life improvements, tho. Fast travel, for one...

Yeah the second palace was super easy compared to the first. More XP per fight, didn't have to do as much of it in one go, better persona selection for the main character, better gear, had actual items etc.

Got to the third palace tonight, will probably take it on tomorrow.

Also it is minor, but I hate the parts where I have to find a new subway line or something because I always just wander around trial and erroring until I find the right exit from the map. I feel like it probably wasn't annoying if you read Japanese and they didn't bother adding anything in to help.

There have been some story parts where it dumps me into a location and tells me I have to go somewhere and then I have to trial and error my way to the right map exit. There's usually not many to pick from so it isn't too hard.

I use fast travel all the rest of the time.

Kamoshida was kind of tough on Hard. When it was time to send Ryuji to steal his crown, he kept noticing Ryuji and sending me back to square one because I had to heal a lot and wasn't dishing out enough damage to keep him occupied. I managed to beat him by constantly keeping him under Tarunda, which let me attack more because I didn't need to heal as much. Tarunda/Matarunda are your best friends on Hard, because it's more about staying alive than maximizing your DPS.

By the time you get to Madarame, you have a much stronger roster and everyone has more skills they can use.

The first few hours in an SMT game are often the hardest because you have so much less to work with. Like in Nocturne, Matador is a lot harder at the time you fight him than most of the late-game bosses are by the time you get to them.

Kamoshida was tough on Hard, I think it took 3 attempts for me to beat him.  I kind of steamrolled Madarame which made me concerned that I was overpowered and that the game wouldn't be challenging any more.  But then the bank guards at the start of the third palace absolutely mopped the floor with my face several times before I barely squeaked out a win.

Makoto's persona!  :gladbron  :aah

Finished the third palace on Hard.  Fuck that pig's team wipe mechanic.   I'd work it down to just a sliver of health but Ann kept running out of SP and I couldn't get in enough damage before it wiped us.  I think it took 20 attempts.

Credit where credit is due: Persona 4 became easy after Yukiko or maybe Kanji's dungeons.  P5's difficulty curve is holding up, so far.

I did cop that 50k yen accessory that regenerates SP for my main character.  I think if I get those for Ann and Makoto it might break the difficulty.

I finished the game this weekend. Didnt max stats or get everyone max.

I still prefer P4 over this. Everything related to Haru was filler. Shido's dungeon was filler. Mementos dungeon was filler. It was near the end of the game I just wanted it to be over. Final boss was... ok, I guess.

Also if P6 still uses "death of main = game over" I'm fucking out. I literally deleted the game after getting RNG killed by enemies 3 times in a row.

Then I re-installed it because fuck my life

Let's be real. You prefer P4 because of Teddy.

I have the impression there must have been some stuff cut regarding Haru.  Her introduction was so abrupt compared to the others.  The stuff with Morgana running away and coming back, etc.  It all felt very hurried and as if pieces were missing from the story.

They definitely cut stuff. I've read that Hifumi was originally supposed to be a party member, but they ended up cutting her stuff because the game was getting too long. You can see some hints of this in the game with the way that Sae talks to you after you establish the Hifumi Confidant ("You must have had someone helping you with tactics, etc").

They may have cut some Haru stuff too.

IMO they didn't rebalance the leveling system after cutting this material, which is why most players will show up to the final dungeon 10 levels away from being able to use even the weakest of the top-tier personas. A Hifumi dungeon probably would have added 5-10 levels for most players, so you'd show up to the final dungeon around level 70-75 instead of 65.

i doubt it had to do with that and more with "we really want you to grind in Mementos".

Hifumi was supposed to be playable and they cut her storyline down because they felt the game was too long, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same with Haru.

I feel like an issue for Persona is that characters who are introduced later, especially for your party, suffer because they're at such an S.Link disadvantage. I'm 50 hours in and I feel like they could've told a complete story by now but things are just dragging out in typical Persona fashion.

I have the impression there must have been some stuff cut regarding Haru.  Her introduction was so abrupt compared to the others.  The stuff with Morgana running away and coming back, etc.  It all felt very hurried and as if pieces were missing from the story.

Yeah when I was fighting one dude in Mementos he kept brainwashing my party which often lead to instawipe. And near the end of the fourth palace I kept getting despaired and wiping. I'm playing on Normal and right now the only game overs I get are when my main character dies to RNG.
