some of the levels are pulled from old sonic games but expanded on

Okay, that makes sense. It was driving me batty last night, especially since the series likes to reuse zone names/themes.

Are there any brand new zone names/types? The second zone was also an old one.

4 of the 12 levels are entirely new.

Oh god, Sonic Mania. I played the first world yesterday and, uh. . .I haven't been following this super closely, but I thought these were all fan-made levels? You could've told me that the first world was Green Hills Zone from the OG Genesis game and I would've believed you. It isn't the actual OG Genesis level, right? It has different bosses. I go to the first part of the second world, and again, if it's new content, it looks exactly like content from the original games? Why? I thought this was going to be new shit made by fans. Did they make them use the old tiles and graphics? Doing so just highlights how shallow the gameplay in Sonic is. They may be new levels, but they feel exactly the same.

In short, Sonic has always been terrible. There just came a point where it became even more terrible.

They're remade in HD.

And yes, Sonic is shallow and terrible.

If you're capable of liking FFXV despite all of it's faults, and I like FFXV a lot too but it is flawed due to being unfinished, then I'm sure you still really like games.

I want to back up the person in the thread that recommended Nier Automata.  It is awesome.  Try it out.

Quote
Nier Automata I literally sat there holding the shoot button during a boss without moving. It was an hp sink, I occasionally did some move that let me not get hit, then resorted to shooting again. Maybe the full game is better.

Yeah, you're not supposed to just shoot.  Unless you're talking about the final boss at the end that you can't reach.  That's really just a big cutscene.  It's on a timer.  There's some dialogue and then your partner figures out a way to hack it get it to shoot missiles at itself and hit itself with it's own arm.

Yeah, basically you shoot at it for a while so you can see that your bullets are ineffective and then some other stuff happens and you rip it's arm off and smash it to death with it's own arm.

Yeah, Queenie, you'd dig Nier Automata. It's the closest thing to a guarantee I can give. Also, in the final game, that section doesn't take as long so it won't feel very bullet spongey.

It's a great game with a cool little story. Lots of little surprises and things that keep the game fresh as it goes on--things I wouldn't want to directly give too much detail on. I can try to sell you on it later. I have a PM-y meeting to go to right now. Pray for me (and Ric Flair).

Yeah, I never played the Automata demo but holy shit, the full game has to be my favorite of the generation, so far. It seems exactly like what you want - a game that has story depth and is very high concept, though the actual gameplay is pretty damn good too. And the music is fantastic!

Also you can try continuing with the retro... retro games are a lot easier to jump into, I feel, and they don't overstay their welcome that much like a newer game would (I really liked P5 but its pacing is terrible!). Play some more shmups and cute em ups  8)

Why would I like Nier?

It does everything really well.  It has one of the best soundtracks.  It has one of the best stories in gaming in my opinion and a lot of people's.  It is very unique and takes advantage of the fact that it's a game for storytelling purposes.   The gameplay is a lot of fun and varied.  The voice actors are good.  The side quests aren't just fluff and filler but contain world building and plot details.  The more you play, the more you care.    It keeps getting better and better throughout with an exceptional ending.

If you need to be convinced more and you don't mind spoilers about the tone of the story and some neat devices that intertwine story and gameplay that would probably be better discovered on your own, the honest trailer video of Nier Automata does a decent job of summing up why it's special.  Only watch it if you need to be convinced though.

Original Nier just had a 68 on metacritic.  Nier:Automata has a 88 and is a work of Platinum Games this time around.  The gameplay has improved tremendously.

I like less and less games. I can't be bothered to play a just decent game anymore, or one that I feel waste my time too much. Exception probably being Persona 5 that does nothing but waste my time, but that I love anyway. But I give up with some games in the fucking tutorial these days... Like the latest Deus Ex. Fuck that. I got better things to waste my time on.

As I said, it's the exception. It's absurd at some points, but there's other parts of the game I find so fucking rewarding, that I can push myself through it. This doesn't happen with most other games, as I just don't enjoy anything about them all that much, to bother with the down time. Something like Uncharted 4 I just can't get through the first few hours of. It's so fucking boring and hasn't even given me a taste of fun yet.

I recently opted to sell all my Wii U and 3DS stuff off (this is before you posted your thread expressing interest in a Wii U, Queen, or I would have offered, although it turns out that my Wii U had a shitload of scratches all over the bottom that I never noticed), getting a new TV with the money I made, and it feels great to clear out a good chunk of the backlog of games I had that I was never going to play at this point.  I think next I need to take a look at my retro stuff and start clearing that out, although I'll probably keep sitting on it for a while longer and see if the prices continue to climb before selling stuff off.
