Let's be honest here, you don't need a dozen fulltime mods. These people were volunteers with day jobs and such, so they wouldn't be there all day. Hire 3 people, that's what, 120k a year? If you are pulling 300k a year in revenue that is a totally normal cost for your business and leaves you with a ton of money left. Unless he went under 200k a year in revenue, there is little reason to not at least have someone full time to manage things while you are busy traveling or whatever he does all day.

Yeah but why do that when you can keep the money for yourself. I'm not Lore's accountant but really the site has always been lazily managed, pointing to Lore clocking as low effort as possible. Just look at how ads were managed. He did buff up the servers ultimately and the mobile version was decent but otherwise not exactly up to date forum (wasn't there facebook / twitter buttons that survived only a few months ?).

I'm here mostly because of how atrocious and one-sided Tyler let the moderation become, and now that the environment he fostered turned hostile towards him, maybe he's willing to dial back some of the moderation policies. I have a feeling he let it get as far as it did for ad revenue purposes, but you could tell from many of his posts he's a moderate kind of guy. I actually found myself agreeing with a lot of his posts on things, despite his coming off as a massive prick. If he changes his moderation style to be more in line with his own beliefs then there's a chance for GAF to move on from its current state.

Moderation in this age of Trump, whose presidency has given rise to open and unapologetic affinity for fascism, is no different than collaboration. You cannot be a moderate in an environment where people go on social media, with their identities exposed, and gladly express vile and hateful views that were once relegated to the fringes of public opinion (yes, they've always existed in the shadows, but their open expression would always be met with swift and penalizing rebuke). Many moderate Germans believed their Jewish friends would face little persecution under Hitler's regime. Funny how that turned out.

Even after the server stopped functioning around midnight EST, Evilore went through both forums.  Every thread referencing the forum closing was locked.  Every thread referencing his groping, showering misadventures was deleted.  Even when the whole site was down, he couldn't help but compulsively go through it and scrub it clean of anything that might make him look bad.

The idea that he might ever re-open the place for discussion seems kinda crazy in light of that. 

At the same time, NeoGAF is Evilore's complete livelihood.  So he's essentially forced to choose between his pride and his income.  I honestly think he'll choose pride.

Yeah, I remember that being posted on the Reddit GAF Hate group when it happened.  It was a total WTF moment that went completely unanswered and unexplained, like so many of his tantrums.

It's probably important to note that the context was someone else on the forum asking how they should prepare for their trip to eastern Europe, and Cranky Jay just said something like "Make sure you don't get scammed like Evilore did that one time."  It wasn't him explicitly mentioning the story, or saying "HAHA Look how this loser got scammed".  He basically just meant it as a cautiounary tale.  At worst maybe it was meant as passive-aggressive.
