Go to a major reddit gaming community. There's not out of control racism or sexism there. On the other hand, I am sure I could dig through NeoGAF and find sexism and racism simply aimed at the communities it deemed proper to hate. There was pro bably more daily seething hatred on NeoGAF than any major gaming subreddit.
It's a different beast. Linear message boards more honestly represent their userbase, for better or worse.
On Reddit, select subs notwithstanding, the streets sweep themselves (which creates its own issues). To see the obvious detritus, you have to sort by controversial or choose to open the auto-collapsed threads at the bottom, provided you can even see them without loading another page. On top, Automoderator is widely used to enforce the more clear-cut rules and filter submissions for off-topic stuff, spam and whatever else is undesireable. Which, by the by, makes it possible for relatively small mod teams to moderate (sometimes multiple) large subs, and steer or stifle discussion across wide swathes of the site. In other words, the whiff of human mediocrity is inescspable.
