It was crazy to witness this whole meltdown in real time.

First people guardedly mention the subject in a few threads that are quickly locked, as moderators try to shuffle the subject off the front page of the forum.

Then posters start to make threads that are very obvious proxies to discuss the matter at hand (stuff like "Rock Star accused of sexual harassment" and "Should accused predators resign from their leadership positions?").

Finally the community at large realizes that most if not all moderation has disappeared, and begins to make topics specifically addressing the crisis.  Once those successfully land without retaliation, the full onslaught of aggressive "Fuck off / I quit / This is bullshit" posts appear, shortly before the plug is pulled on the whole website.

My problem with Rey is that her development with the Force is mostly level. She starts off piloting the MF deftly, then she pushes back against Kylo's mind probe, and, finally, she overcomes him in battle. Luke, on the other hand, doesn't even begin to mess with the Force until halfway into the movie and even then, it's just him deflecting blaster shots. When he finally taps into it at the end, he goes from a mild skeptic to a full believer. Rey doesn't really have that type of journey.

Luke was already established as a pilot. They make his piloting heroic, because he's the hero but it is put in there.

It's equivalent to Rey being good at hiding or smuggling. That's not hard to buy given what they establish about her.

We don't know enough about her to know why she's good at this.

Anikan blew up a ship at 10. Somehow.

That's why I am saying they're going to explain her over-competence via the midichlorian route. Just say she's full of Force juju and that's why she's fighting back J.P. the JV Vader.

And yet somehow Luke could also do alot of amazing things.

Like be an expert with blasters.

And know how to use a lightsaber.

And pilot starfighters when it's been established that t-16 skyhoppers were just glorified crop dusters.

But it's ok.

He didn't "beat" the villian until the end when he gives a speech about love and the bad guy suddenly redeems himself.

And the empire get's beat by space monkeys.

Masterful writing.

As someone old enough to have seen the original movies when they came out, Luke never seemed amazing until he began to really use the force. He wasn't an expert with Blasters. He could shoot them. So could Leia even though there's no introduction of her being a soldier or blaster expert. That he shoots blasters and flies ships work within the setting and the genre that Star Wars comes from. Space, Western, SciFi pulp.

He doesn't even down the Emperor. He redeems his father by sparing him, and his father downs the Emperor. You don't really see a jump in Luke's aptitude until we hit Jabba's place.
