Opiate, explain what went down from your point of view (the events and circumstances leading up to your own demodding).
Frictions had been growing for some time: I had been growing distant, ideologically, from both Evilore and several of the admins for some time, and in ways that much of this forum might appreciate. Most specifically, I was concerned about the ideological purity the site was increasingly exhibiting, and I expressed how important it was to support and defend the rights of people you disagreed with, lest your community become an echo chamber. While most moderators agreed with the concept when expressed so abstractly, only a few were really interested in applying the principle when the rubber hit the road, so to speak.
The first major crack that got me in "trouble" was regarding a thread describing everyone living in the south as ignorant racist hicks, which a great number of members were piling on to. I suggested that these sorts of blanket statements about whole population groups were intellectually analogous to bigoted statements about
protected groups such as blacks, women, or Jews, and this point did not go over well. I ended up having to ban several people for bigotry, and these were the first strongly contested bans of my tenure by other moderators, since they were highly sympathetic to those posters' viewpoints. (As a side note, I actually did not ban very often relative to many other moderators, as I did not believe disagreeing with me was itself sufficient grounds for moderator action. I tried to protect JayDubya, for example, who I see is now here, even though I rather vociferously disagree with a variety of his political positions.)
Another thread came along similar to the one described above, then another, and each time it seemed clear to me that a double standard was being applied and that I did not personally approve of. So when I finally engaged in a highly combustible topic like pedophilia, any leash I might have was already gone. Once the decision was made to demod me, I didn't really see any reason to stay around, so I immediately and summarily moved on with my life.
