I dont think I have ever said this, and hope to never say it again, but Eminem distilled this issue pretty well, its simply athletes using their platform and voice to speak up for those that lack one. Like black athletes have done in the past. Personally I think the slave analogy is a little bit of a reach and actually gets away from the message many have written about or expressed.

Though if people like ole tummyfat are struggling to grasp the simplicity and straightforwardness of their underlying message, slave stuff aside, that is a failure on their part, no one elses. What makes the reddit structure work is the downvote system and people eventually getting time limited if their karma is negative.

On a GAF-like forum, there's no equivalent. You can put trolls on ignore, but their posts are still there, in whatever order they came in. On reddit, the troll posts end up at the bottom of the page, so you won't even see them unless you sort by Controversial, and even then those people can only make one post every 10 minutes.

In theory, but this can definitely make the echochamber/circlejerking problem much worse.
