i didn't even get a chance to read it
Full post:
I have some concerns with Reset. Please read this post with an open mind and I will try to be respectful.
I signed up because not only the fact I see potential in the site, but also the fact that I have concerns and don't know any other way to express them besides signing up and asking so I can get my answers straight from the horses mouth.
One of the biggest concerns with the site is that in many aspects it's a new GAF. That alone carries itself a certain type of baggage. While this isn't GAF in itself as it's a totally new site, it's still very much a site ran by former Gaffers. One big issue with Gaf was how the staff treated matters. By the end of its life, Neogaf had a very toxic environment lacking transparency. My perma ban for example is a ban many have contested as not being worthy not only of a permanent ban, but even a warning as all I did was express my opinion, albeit in my own way, without calling anyone any names. You can read it here. It felt like mods banned first, asked questions later and it forced and environment where users were constantly tip toeing on egg shells, never sure what would truly be ban worthy. For example, in one instance shortly prior to my perma ban, Massive Duck accused me of not being black. It ended up in a discussion that was very heated, but I was the only one banned because I called someone an idiota while Massive Duck was spared. It felt like certain posters were protected for God knows what reason and certain posters weren't - again, for whatever God knows beyond suggesting that policies of the staff were inconsistent at best.
In another example, I previously protected by staff - I do not know why - and in - again - a heated, albeit respectful, discussion about race Kinitari was banned just because he disagreed while I was spared. No one in that discussion was really worth banning, but that was a turning point where I realized that people were being banned not because they did an offense, but because the mod that banned them happened to disagree with their stance.
I shouldn't have to articulate how toxic an environment that is in a forum that promises to be about breeding discussion among e-friends.
Given that the staff are many prominent posters from Gaf that certainly posted in many hot threads on that site, I find it very concerned whether or not Reset is headed in a very similar area where the only way that goes is what the staff deems good, even if what's good isn't clearly explained.
I hope that the Reset staff are open to fostering an environment where people can actually talk about things and aren't banned just because of the way they think. That was one of the major undoings of Neogaf. One you start banning people for daring to mention that one of its most prominent members (Amirox) was now in jail for child pornography or that EviLore had gotten into a shower, naked, uninvited while standing on a platform of moral superiority, all bets are off and there's no reason to respect the staff, because they clearly don't respect themselves.
I pray that my post was presented in the cleanest, most respectful manner possible. I am far too used to being banned for being me and it worries me that I even have to preface this with,"please don't ban me."
Thank you for reading.
You're black? As a black person, what are your thoughts on the 'n' word?
Not a good word. I have reclaimed it though to not fear it. I say nicca a lot. When I was a kid I was beaten up while being called it so I'm not okay with non blacks using it. At the same time I find any attempt to censor it to n-word as a black person gives the word more power and fear. I saw a march ten years ago with black folks going down the street in rank and file holding a fucking banner saying to no to the n-word, which just the word power if you're so scared of it that you can't say it. That's all I'll say about that.
Yeah I agree on the not caring part. I'm from the UK, so whenever I hear other UK black people saying it, I cringe a bit. We don't have the social stigma that is associated with Americans (even if it was still used as a racial slur).
I just laugh at people that try to police it as a word only minorities can say. My response is always the same: "Try and stop white people at a rap concert."
Case in point, I was at the BBK Takeover at The O2 like two months ago, so many white people dropped the word casually and didn't even flinch. I was almost shocked, but then not really. Just thought that was funny.
