Sadly been putting this one off. After 'The Battle' (waterloo book) and 'La Grande Armee' and 'Memoirs of Napoleon's Egyptian Expedition' I was sorta burnt out. However I got back into 'the mood' after just recently finishing the B&N VALUE PURCHASE:
"BATTLES OF THE BIBLE"

Basically theorizes REALISTIC methods used in various bible battles and uses the bible as a sort of road-map through tribe progression, and does an excellent job describing the defensive and offensive strategies. Some of the battle tactics were pretty hilarious tho, I mean dumb hilarious. Then again WWI battle tactics were pretty hilarious too.
ANYWAY I actually bought this particular Trafalgar book cause of the line 'and he was shot on the poop'. Poop obviously refers to the poop deck but god damn if it isnt still pretty FUNNY.
Looks like a point by point recollection based off of entries in sailor diaries and various records.
I still think The Battle

Is one of the best engagement books ive ever read. The amount of detail is kinda mindblowing and the account of the resolution was even handed.
For fiction i'd also like to throw out recommendations for:
