Wha'choo readings?
« on: January 27, 2007, 06:22:25 PM »
I picked up a couple books recently.

I started with this one:

It's alright, but I really don't have an interest in Kinsey and actually, his face kind of scares me.

Then I found this one:

Which I am finding more interesting and close to home.

I'd be interested in your thoughts if you have the time or inclination.  That book is why I have tinfoil hats for every day of the week.

Great book.

I've been meaning to read it for a while. Basically ever since I read 1984 about three years ago.

Sadly been putting this one off. After 'The Battle' (waterloo book) and 'La Grande Armee' and 'Memoirs of Napoleon's Egyptian Expedition' I was sorta burnt out. However I got back into 'the mood' after just recently finishing the B&N VALUE PURCHASE:

"BATTLES OF THE BIBLE"

Basically theorizes REALISTIC methods used in various bible battles and uses the bible as a sort of road-map through tribe progression, and does an excellent job describing the defensive and offensive strategies. Some of the battle tactics were pretty hilarious tho, I mean dumb hilarious. Then again WWI battle tactics were pretty hilarious too.

ANYWAY I actually bought this particular Trafalgar book cause of the line 'and he was shot on the poop'. Poop obviously refers to the poop deck but god damn if it isnt still pretty FUNNY.

Looks like a point by point recollection based off of entries in sailor diaries and various records.

I still think The Battle

Is one of the best engagement books ive ever read. The amount of detail is kinda mindblowing and the account of the resolution was even handed.

For fiction i'd also like to throw out recommendations for:

If you haven't read Chris Adrian's "The Children's Hospital", you are illiterate.

That said, I plunked down another cool 100$ at the bookstore today. I snagged "Best American Food/Comics/New Writing" and finally got around to grabbing the reprint of the first 3 issues of McSweeney's.

I've been making my way through Perotta's Little Children, as well as Naked Ecomics and Reinventing the Bazaar, as per suggestion from my lady.

Udderndat, not much.

Yeah, honestly tho the French never had any business in a naval battle, and Napoleon knew it lol. I bet he breathed a big fucking sigh of relief when he had an excuse to ditch the landing in britain to wage war in the east.

From all i've read Nelson was actually a respectable tactician, but Wellington, at least from what ive read here and there and the in-depth account of Waterloo, wasn't actually that 'good'. I mean if the Prussians hadn't shown up on N's flank in the last minute he would have lost to Napoleon in his worst performance since Egypt. Egypt was France's Vietnam tho so I dunno if thats fair ;)

To be more precise Nelson stranded his ARMY in egypt, he ran to France on his own and got another Army while his old one rotted in egypt LOL

thank you for clarifying, MAF.  I am sure that I, as a history major at an elite academic institution, who has written papers on Nelson, was not aware of that specification of the facts of Napoleon's Egypt campaign.

Flaunting your expensive boring education against my completely free self-education is the stuff of legendary arguments.

Im arguing SEMANTICS HERE, the minute I started down that road is the minute I stopped being serious. As if Napoleon could single handedly wrangle Europe without his Army like some kind of Dynasty Warriors character. ;)

I'm currently reading through Chapter 4, and as I near the end of this mini-series, I'm often wondering at the many gaping plotholes strewn around. But I'm easily entertained and this book series has done just that.

"the dog of the marriage" by amy hempel.

an excerpt for flavor:

Quote from: the dog of the marriage
On the last night of the marriage, my husband and I went to the ballet.  We sat behind a blind man; his guide dog, in harness, lay beside him in the aisle of the theater.  I could not keep my attention on the performance; instead, I watched the guide dog watch the performance.  Throughout the evening, the dog's head moved, following the dancers across the stage.  Every so often the dog would whimper slightly.  "Because he can hear the high notes we can't?" my husband said.  "No," I said, "because he was disappointed with the choreography."
I work with these dogs every day, and their capability, their decency, shames me.
I am trying not to take things personally.  This on advice from the evaluator at  the school for the blind where I train dogs.  She had overheard me ask a Labrador retriever, "Are you trying to ruin my day?"
I suppose there are many things one should try not to take personally.  An absence of convenient parking, inclement weather, a husband who finds that he loves someone else.
