I'd put him in the same category as, say, a Christopher Hitchens (rip). He articulates himself very well, debates consistently strongly, and tends to be a compelling watch/listen/read. I've gleaned a lot from Hitchens' debates, lectures, and essays, but I certainly don't agree with all of the content of them, nor do I put him on any kind of moral pedestal that he could suddenly be knocked down from by a reveal about one thing he said some time. Hitchens can easily be dismissed entirely by pointing to how he never conceded that the 2003 Iraq war was a mistake. He rationalized it to the very end. That's a position I do not respect whatsoever. Okay, now what? Why do I really need to take that into account in any way? When does the stuff he said and did that had value cease to have that value? If he sexually harassed or assaulted someone? If he did something abhorrent we find out about eventually? Maybe there's something well known already along those lines, but I'll still gladly read one of his essays. It's not a damned endorsement of his deepest failures to do so. The bar for what constitutes that is always changing anyway as society changes. And I'm not saying I'm better than you for approaching life that way, either, if, say, the Hitchens Iraq thing does in fact poison the well for your perception of his contributions and value. There's validity to that too, and that's a great reason to talk to each other about this stuff.

According to what I heard the last time I spoke to besada, Stump was really upset about everything that happened with GAF and needed some time for himself, so he went off the radar for a bit. It's no secret he was he put a lot of effort and energy into that forum and he's one of the few people pretty much no one, here, there, anywhere ever had a problem with (which is a feat achieved by few people in any position of relative authority). I don't think he really cares to post on resetera. It's a lot different when you're personally invested in something.

Nobody had direct problems with him here but there were still complains.

Stump was a great, thoughtful poster and a good moderator... but he slowly over time grew wings and a stinger and joined the hive mind after seemingly resisting it for so long. When he jumped aboard the crazy train is probably a key moment in GAF fully going off the rails, considering his long winded but generally thoughtful posts did seem to have a major impact on the community overall. Once the conductor punched his crazy train ticket though, his posts instead became awful, self righteous, smarter-than-thou social justice trash and I didn’t feel so guilty for laughing at his gigantic pumpkin-shaped head anymore.

Still, I hope getting away from GAF/staying away from ERA and all their crazy toxic bullshit has been good for him and allowed him to re-center himself somewhat. I don’t consider him to be an irredeemable cunt the way Besada or Bishoptl are.

Part of a successful diagnosis and treatment is telling the doctor what you experience. The bolded is exactly what you should be doing and physicians should want you to do.

I'm wondering whether it was determined/guessed that the OP seemed to be too over-the-top to the point of self-parody, a secret troll trying to get the left to eat themselves.  Other Reset threads have been closed with similar conclusions but they were more obviously bait.

They can't allow discussion of what the alt-right or conservatives might be doing, and they also can't trust their own allies to be genuine.

I bought Savage Empire when it came out. It was... decent. Not great, but not the worst thing I've ever read. The main character was effectively his GAF persona. There are points where you'll be reading the book and, because we're all so familiar with his antics, it pulls you back and makes you say, "yeah, you can tell Bish wrote this..."
I have no idea how it would read if I had no idea who the author was or if I didn't have a generally negative taste for him.

The art and coloring is somewhat uneven, which reflects the apparent struggle with getting the art finished and such.

Overall I'd give it a 7/10, if I'm feeling generous. More like a 6.5/10. There is nothing in the book that makes it a compelling page turner or anything. It tries to be mostly a fun action romp, but it doesn't really build up much drama or significant character development.

I've been a GAF member since 2007.

Last year, I wrote a post here about how NeoGAF had been a safe space for me in ~2005-2007 when I was bullied through grade school. I would read the forum every day after school. It had a real sense of community. It was a very positive community. And I wrote in that post that I had grown frustrated with the hostile groupthink and culture of intolerance that now characterized NeoGAF. It was preventing reasonable (and enjoyable) discussion from taking place.

And I was banned for that post.

What made GAF such an enjoyable forum between 2007 and until at least 2012 was its fun, collegial, open-minded, and relatively laid back atmosphere. It had a real sense of community. My favorite time of year growing up was always E3 and the threads it spawned on NeoGAF. It was so much fun. The threads moving so quickly you could barely follow everyone's reactions, the memes, in-jokes, and a smaller scale of discussion that just isn't possible on other sites. NeoGAF was intimate, inclusive, and a happy place for a lot of people. It felt like a kind of internet home. The reality is that for a place to feel like home it needs to be inclusive, tolerant, and it needs to cut people some slack and let them speak freely and risk saying something offensive.

This forum, its moderators, and EvilLore, did almost everything wrong. Their actions and inactions pushed reasonable users like myself away. Year over year, users like myself posted less often and users who were harsh, unreasonable, and frankly bullies were encouraged to stay and post. This encouraged groupthink; it facilitated the toxic Social Studies Warrior obsession with seeing racism and sexism in EVERYTHING -- which literally ruins culture and makes everything miserable (including gaming); this encouraged witch hunts and it had a horrible chilling effect on discussion.

By 2015, NeoGAF was NOTHING like what it had been. It was the opposite of the forum that I went to to escape being bullied in school. It was a forum where people were actively hunted down and bullied for expressing their often very reasonable viewpoints. What a disaster.

Currently, I post on /r/KotakuInAction, which is an open, inclusive, and tolerant forum for discussing all manner of issues related to gaming. Other subreddits are decent, but they have hivemind tendencies (/r/NintendoSwitch is particularly bad) due to what I imagine is the rigging of the voting mechanism or perhaps just emergent aspects of the voting mechanism that promote conformism. This means that the calibre of discussion in those subreddits isn't always the best and criticism is downvoted into oblivion.

While I am glad to have the opportunity to make this post, the circumstances leading up to EvilLore's change of heart and to the changes here at NeoGAF don't inspire much hope. While it is a terrible injustice that EvilLore has been subjected to defamatory allegations that have not been substantiated, the fact that those allegations (and the flight of users who I have no doubt were driving massive amounts of advertising revenues) were necessary to bring NeoGAF to this point is upsetting. Not only should it have never gotten this bad, intervention should have occurred for entirely different reasons. That they are motivated almost exclusively by EvilLore's self-interest, and given that he has no credibility to claim otherwise, I remain deeply skeptical that NeoGAF will ever be anything like what it used to be so many years ago.

With that said, I believe that NeoGAF may be capable of becoming that kind of a home once again. Its smaller scale community is more unique in 2018* than it was in 2007. Sites like Reddit are increasingly struggling to offer a sense of community due to their size, scale, and algorithmic nature. So if NeoGAF can offer what they can't, I might come back. Because that was something special. But I'm not holding my breath.

 

Someone finally called EviLore out. Anyone who honestly believes that guy gives a single fuck about "building a community" or "fostering discussion" is delusional. He cares about nice cars and grand trips and lording over nerds.

I'm really enjoying the slow death of GAF, and that a new, alt-right-lite version is rising from its ashes.
