But it's nearly impossible to deal with problem students nowadays. Still I'll be waiting for certain posters on REE to start a thread linking him to the alt-right because, reasons.

This is a god-damned tragedy. The thought that it could've easily happened at my school makes me sick to my stomach. 17 kids dead and all these fuckers can do is cry that they are WHITE?

Public schools are so performance-based in terms of resources allocated to them that they do their best to minimize any and all disciplinary strikes on student records, so that everyone can walk at commencement, and they can say "see?  Look how much our graduation rate has improved!  See how few expulsions we have too?  Give us more money, state!"

Technology is so pervasive that kids can do anything in class, including play games on their phone all day, or dick around on their 1:1 devices assigned to them.  It's not worth constantly yelling at them to stop and you can't take away their technology because now it's required for class.  And my local high school has a secondary building they send all the bad/disruptive/pregnant students to, so they're "not a distraction" to the others and technically they're still attending high school and count towards grad rates.  It's all about loopholes and keeping up appearances now.

I know that this is going to be off topic here but I do think it's important to try and give some context here.

For the people enquiring about other member's bans, this is something that's being discussed right now as to best way to get the balance right about keeping other members up to date but also respecting the privacy of the members who may have incurred a ban of some sort.

I'm not referring to any particular ban now but it does seem sometimes that when a ban is issued that other members can attribute it to the most recent post of the member who is banned, when that isn't necessarily the case. Whenever we issue disciplinary action there can be a history behind that rather than it just being due to a single incident and I know that it can be very difficult to establish justification for a ban without being able to see the larger picture.

One of the things that is true and I think this is worth remembering is that anybody who is banned does have the ability to get in touch and appeal their ban as we don't want people to feel they have just had the door locked behind them and that they are expected to put up with action that they genuinely feel is incorrect.

Lets be honest, people may well be unhappy about their ban but that can be a very different thing to feeling that it was a justifiable ban. I do think it's positive that other members can be concerned but I also thing that it's very positive that members haven't been getting in touch when they've been banned as that hopefully illustrates that although they may not like that it's happened that there's a certain level of understanding, of acceptance that it's been done for the correct reasons.

One of the things that's been discussed is a way to give other members a general idea of the length of the ban because they can and do happen for anywhere between a single day and a permanent ban. Maybe there would be a countdown or a return date showing their username, something along those lines. At the moment it simply says "banned" which could literally mean anything and we are hoping to clarifying that in some way even though the best way of doing it hasn't yet been decided.

I mentioned earlier that there can be bans for a single day, although I've not issued one of those I have personally given people what may be best to think of as "a couple of days break" if they've possibly been too involved, too heated in a particular discussion and it's looking like it's probably going to benefit them/and us for them to not be able to take part for a weekend or so. I think it's better than to just let things carry on and risk that they could well end up doing something a lot worse, maybe get other people involved and even end up with a longer ban.

Permanent bans are pretty rare although they do become more common when there's an large group of new members being admitted. It may seem silly but there are people who sign up who really don't want to be members. They'll just post links to porn, shops that sell PSN accounts or just come here to disrupt the site. Luckily we do catch the vast majority of those posts with the post approval system. Some do get through but it is fortunately quite rare.

As many people will be aware there has been issues with bans in the past where they had seemingly been done solely to damage NeoGAF but none of the team want anything like that to happen now. In reality if we were to ban ten people today then that's ten people who aren't able to contribute while they are banned. For the most basic of reason that we want people to be happy posting here and also to feel safe while doing so, a ban will only be issued if we see it as being for the benefit to the forum and/or the member who is actually being banned.

Nothing has been set in stone yet about how we're going to proceed with that but that's because we want to ensure that we do it the best way we can, for everybody. I am sorry that I've taken this off topic somewhat but I did think it was important to add some context here.
