A person can irrationally hate [insert group] but make exceptions for select individuals, because they believe them to be the 'exceptions that prove the rule'. There's nothing special to racism that demands of racists to never compromise on their beliefs. Quite the opposite in fact, as with anything that doesn't exist independent of human minds.
