Lagers Unemployment thread
« on: March 01, 2018, 02:06:55 AM »
Lagers Log, March 1st, Year of our Lord 2018

I'm still on payroll for the next two months, so far I have been checking job ads every day, and have been talking to the city council about possibly opening up a mobile coffee cart.
Been cranking out a lot of numbers to see how viable this would be but in the end it comes down to "how many cups can I sell?".

The minimum goal would be 2600 USD pre tax per month (to be able to contribute to the household), which is very low for Denmark, basically any full time job will give you more then this. This translates roughly into 1250 cups of coffee a month. Which in a day 20 month would be around 62 cups a day. It doesnt sound a lot, but its a small town and Im not sure it can be done. Plus Id need to invest some cash to make it happen. Minimum investment would be around 8000 USD.

Some kind of Uber gig would be fun too maybe, if Uber wasnt banned here  :'(

As far as normal jobs go I definately don't want to go back to work in sales for someone, maybe inbound sales would be allright. Customer Service would be perfect actually. I'm increasingly looking at jobs that don't involve sitting in an office too, Kindergarten for example. Some nice part time positions open here and I love kids. Could be great fun. Something close to home is nice too, really dont feel like a 2-3 hour commute daily anymore.

Good news is our financial position is secure and for the next two years I am eligible for benefits, so I have time to look :)

Is it ok if other unemployed people post in here?   :doge

wait lol Uber is banned in Denmark? What a fascist country

Sure

Yep, Uber got banned because they didn't want to comply with some local laws (like cars being fitted with sensors that register how many occupants there are).

I'm sure they will be back someday.

I had an acquaintance looking into the whole food cart stuff. In Paris it goes down to having the best spots and tight public regulations restraining said spots (plus safety norms for cooking equipment, energy supply...).

A good spot would be at a high passage point in a place with lots of offices around, I guess.

Obviously you'll probably need to stock a couple more items (teas, juices, maybe pastries...).

Yeah, you need some high margin items in there for up-selling. I know I always overpay for a applejack or some-such when I get coffee.

In college I did a hotdog cart business.  Still one of the most lucrative jobs I've ever held. We set up outside a hardware store and made tons of money off of the day laborers and such. Easily pulled down $300-$600/day.

First thing I would do is find out how much competition there is and just watch them for a couple weeks to see how many customers they get per hour and at what time of day. If you know that most demand is in the morning and evening, that's obviously helpful for a family man.

Selling shit to people on the street is easy. But finding them when they're in the mood to buy is the hard part. May also want to learn how to make a basic mobile website for people to put in orders or schedule ahead (eg: pick up your coffee in the morning/afternoon/evening when your cart is set up near the office complex/shopping center/park).

I have a degree in history

But

1. To be a teacher you need to have a teacher degree + subject, so thats another 3-4 years of education
2. Im not a native speaker and my degree is in a different field of history then “teach kids”

The key is to not sell Coffee but an experience(tm). Make sure interesting shit happens on the street, so people stick around, share the moment and watch whatever is unfolding and then persuade them to grab something to drink.

Was about to post an update as I'll be sending out my first application today. A rare find, a customer service job in English.

Also thinking of applying to the local recycling center as they have some full time positions, Im a hippy so this would be a great fit.

Sent my old manage a mail asking where my promised recommendation is. He did say he thinks Im great and have a good work ethic, plus he still believed I was the right man for the job despite not hitting the numbers. So I expect something good.

And as far what Im doing at home besides browsing for jobs? Bit of painting, playing games.

You got my respect for being so laid back about this. My father really despises unemployed people (almost as much as he hates fat people) and believes them to be the scum of the earth. Growing up and having to hear his tantrums on an almost daily basis made me really neurotic and afraid of being out of work  :doge

Well I think its important to enjoy this period as much as you can if you don't want to become a neurotic heap of worry. I have two years to find something I like before I need to have anything to pay bills. From May on I will have to apply to around 3 jobs a week as a requirement to receive my unemployment insurance.

And the painting is just walls, ceilings, doors... zzzzzzzzzz When the sun comes out and the temp will be above 5 I will paint the house on the outside, that will be fun.

Sent out application :rock Wish me luck!

So I had one phone interview in the past month but I dont think it went well. It was exactly the type of position that would be perfect for me (customer success).

Still three weeks left of full pay so looking around for something good.

I somehow ended up looking at getting a Masters in History today too  :doge

I'm not sure that a PhD in history is worth much more than a bachelor. Not all PhD degrees lead to a high paying job.

How about studying business instead? Haven't most of your recent jobs been in sales?

You get paid to do it, so its just another job, but a bit more interesting (if you enjoy your field).

It requires a lot of hard work and you will not manage well unless you are truly passionate about the topic. There are other occupations that pay better for less effort.

I’ve decided to change field and prepare for a comfortable and sexy semi-retirement early. Switching from full time work to part time work and part time study feels like unemployment, in all the best ways. Well, apart from the working and studying. Got way more time for wanking and drugs though, and that’s what matters.

Anyway. Take this chance to get it right. Think your options through very carefully, plan far ahead, and when you’ve made up your mind, take it fucking seriously. That would be the advice of a former professional drifter approaching his 40’s.

Now I just need to live by my words. Just after this coffee. And joint.

Edit: also, think carefully about the trade off between things you’re passionate about, and things that will bring you marketable skills. They need to cross over somewhere or you’ll be choosing between money and happiness.

Most of the people i know who chose supposed "happiness" over marketable skills are not particularly happy these days and neither do they have money. It's a nice idea to go get the best of the both worlds but young millenials and the next generation particularly won't/don't have many opportunities at all. Obviously everyone(or close to it) thinks they are the hottest shit alive when they are young, but statistics don't lie... Sometimes.  :doge

So yeah I've been employed for two weeks now :)

+Cut down commute to work by 12-15 hours a week.
+Cut down working hours by around 2 hours a week.
+Combined that's at least 26% less hours "on the job".
+Get to exercise on the job, no need for gym. Walking between 12 and 20 km a day.
+Work outside the office in fresh air and sunshine.
+Less to no stress, no targets.
+Get to improve my Danish as I only talk Danish.
+Get to be a bit more in the local community, rather then getting to know people 50km away in another town.

-Took a 44% wage cut.
-Work outside so weather can also be rain and snow.

Overall I'm very happy even if this job is kind  uneducated and lower status I guess, I can see myself walking the beat for a few years and get in shape, practice my Danish, and be a part of the local community more. And while the work is simple it does take a lot from me mentally to be out there and forced to talk and listen Danish all the time.  The wage cut is going to get some adjusting too as our fun money just plummeted but the financials still look alright as my wife has a cool job. If you factor in the fact I commute and work about 26% less now the 44% wage cut less painful.  Important thing is I'm no dreading to go to work anymore and it doesn't keep me up at night and worry me when I come home.

Well I'm off to write some parking tickets.  :iface

on a big job at a big rate.

a more ambitious person would use this to springboard their career, i'll be taking the money and enjoying the last ten days of the WC in london, before renting out my flat and going home for a month long surfing holiday, followed by a month in vietnam.

i don't really even consider holidays holidays, i consider "holiday" the default state with work being the way to facilitate it.
