When Voat takes over. Are you guys enjoying neogaf free speech?
If you think free speech is supposed to mean you enjoy everything being said, you've got a misconception of the purpose of free speech. Instead of keeping the ideas to himself and letting them fester, he felt comfortable expressing them, and is now being corrected. Whether or not he takes that correction to heart is up to him, but being able to have a conversation at all is paramount.
Put another way, would you want your buddy keeping some terrible ideas to himself, having a silent effect on his actions and worldview, or would you want him telling them to you so you could set him straight?
The measure of a good forum: How much you can call homosexual pedophiles. Go fuck yourself.
Yes, that is a good example of not taking a correction to heart, which can unfortunately sometimes happen. Thank you for participating in this informative demonstration.
I don't think free speech means "you enjoy everything being said,", I think a general, videogame forum should have moderation that prevents people from vomiting blatant /pol/shit arguments.
Are you oppose to moderators banning people who go "distinguished black fellows HAVE SUB-HUMAN IQ AND SHOULD BE ENSLAVED"? Because that would a violation of the freedom of speech you love so much.
You keep saying freedom of speech is something we "enjoy" (in your original post) and "love so much." Stop it. Freedom of speech isn't enjoyable; it's uncomfortable.
You bring up the valid observation that these things exist on a spectrum, and lines will have to be drawn. The most obvious example is that courts have drawn a line at yelling "fire" in a crowded movie theater.
And acknowledging that lines will be drawn, I completely understand how you think where you would draw the line is better than where Joe Schmo would draw the line. That's sort of the nature of humans: "I'm right, you're wrong."
What the principle of free speech suggests is that you err on the side of allowance.
I could get into the principles and rules I would set up if I were the mod of a forum (civility among posters, consistency among mods), but I don't want to make this too long. Regardless, yes, that hypothetical message you wrote would be banned because there's no attempt at discourse, it's not civil, and its whole purpose is to inflame--which is why you conjured it. I have a buddy that has lots of debates with me, and he's brought up IQ differences before, and I've rebutted his points. That's how it's supposed to work, so long as such things are presented with civility and sincerity. Ostracizing someone out of self-righteous fury may feel good, but it's not helpful in the long run.
