everyone was in good health and took vacations on a regular basis. The average level of happiness was just higher then I encounter in the USA. We need to change our culture towards work and learn to enjoy life more here with government aid allowing that. We need UHC, paid time off, worker rights, etc...People weren't glued to their phones all the time either.

And as I find myself waiting, in anticipation for a Next Nintendo Direct(hopefully in August maybe?), I find that this sensation is quite odd, just in general. Why am I, and many others getting excited for an event that does not officially exist? I am craving trailers for Nintendo’s new games, especially Smash.

I know I am not the only one, as Nintendo Direct hype threads, are some of the largest on Era, especially when there hasn’t been one officially announced. And that’s what I realized, just how brilliant and manipulative Nintendo’s marketing with Directs is. And I think this comes down into a couple of ways.

1. You can stave off disappointment with fans extremely easily.

This, is a huge one. Many Nintendo fans who were left disappointed with this E3, they were just like, “eh, I will wait for the next Direct”. And if they were increasingly upset however, that dissapointment can be staved quite easily with the next Direct itself. Not only that, but they can turn dissapointment, into anticipation. Nintendo’s sly remarks stating, “ohohoho, we have more games yet to announce my pretty ones”, are inherit proof of this concept. So you can have people merely waiting and anticipating instead of people outright disappointed.

2. Short Time Frames, Means a Concentrated Marketing Blitz with little effort.

A big concept of the Directs, is that they are announced 1-3 days before it is officially aired. Many other companies detail announcements weeks or months before they happen. Not only that, but after they are announced Nintendo is always trending on social media. This basically drives all Nintendo fans to Era, causes Youtubers to drop what they are doing to make predictions, it causes thousands of retweets on Twitter. The pure unpredictability of it all, along with the short time frames practically drowns any other sort of gaming news. This throws out a huge curveball to other marketing, and it causes many outlets to wait with baited breath for the next Nintendo Direct so that they can be first to cover it.

3. You train your audience to wait and spend.

Didn’t get the game you wanted? Are you sad GTAV isn’t on the Switch? It’s okay poppy, you can wait for the next Direct. And then the next one. And then the next one.

These Nintendo Directs truly make an interesting case of trying and testing fans patience, and the simple fact that announcements happen so quickly, really gets people to open their wallets. Other companies usually detail games at least 6 months in advance, meaning that for every other publisher, I know what is coming. But for Nintendo? I may have money saved up for Smash, but Nintendo could announce a plethora of third party titles that I would “need to have”, allowing for impulse purchases. This short term announcements don’t give people time to save their money and think about it, but to spend right away.

The biggest thing though, is the reason why people are impulse spending because of Directs, is because they are waiting to see a certain game. Whether it is Smash, or Metroid, unannounced games like Animal Crossing, or 3rd party games. Everyone gathers there hoping for what they want, and usually end up buying something different. That waiting for that “one game” allows for huge impulse purchases due to the blitz marketing.


These Nintendo Directs, especially in Modern Nintendo, are actually a big reason why I think software sales are so high to Nintendo. So with the recent Software Numbers, and anticipation for the next Nintendo Direct, I wanted to kind of reflect on them. These Directs are extremely clever and manipulative marketing.... but man as a fan do I love them to death. They really serve so many purposes for PR and fan interaction, so it’s really interesting to see their effects.

I used to supporting indie devs, but I can't remember the last indie game I bought

Metal Gear Solid 4 Limited Edition - never owned a ps3 and still have never played it. Just a huge fan of the series.

Yakuza series so they keep localizing them. I've bought all of them at least twice. Always import the Japanese release and then the localized versions, sometimes I used to also get their CE but now a days i just buy an extra copy to gift to friends.

Used to buy every Total War game and DLC until they forgot about their core audience and made back to back Warhammer games ( I don't like them ) Gimmie back my historical rts games. I'm not pre ordering the next one like usually did and will wait and see.

I buy 4 copies of every dragon quest game when they come out here in the states. Love the series and I hope they keep bringing them over. Also, not that Naughty Dog needs it but I always buy two copies of their games at launch. Usually one digital and one collectors/standard. I’ve also bought every yakuza game since the first came out all those years ago and have yet to play one. That’s one of my biggest shames. I don’t know where to start at this point.

Instead of having 1 or 2 events a year to announce games, Nintendo announces games and information in short bursts known as Nintendo Directs. Instead of just releasing trailers on their YouTube, they do a short term event, within nearly a moment’s notice can turn around and create ripples among the internet.

This is brilliant marketing, as it can largely stave off disappointing events, it can create announcements on Nintendo’s terms, and it has trained Nintendo’s audience to always anticipate more news.

That anticipation is what I like to call, “The Eternal Wait for the Next Nintendo Direct”. And as I find myself waiting, in anticipation for a Next Nintendo Direct(hopefully in August maybe?), I find that this sensation is quite odd, just in general. Why am I, and many others getting excited for an event that does not officially exist? I am craving trailers for Nintendo’s new games, especially Smash.

I know I am not the only one, as Nintendo Direct hype threads, are some of the largest on Era, especially when there hasn’t been one officially announced. And that’s what I realized, just how brilliant and manipulative Nintendo’s marketing with Directs is. And I think this comes down into a couple of ways.

1. You can stave off disappointment with fans extremely easily.

This, is a huge one. Many Nintendo fans who were left disappointed with this E3, they were just like, “eh, I will wait for the next Direct”. And if they were increasingly upset however, that dissapointment can be staved quite easily with the next Direct itself. Not only that, but they can turn dissapointment, into anticipation. Nintendo’s sly remarks stating, “ohohoho, we have more games yet to announce my pretty ones”, are inherit proof of this concept. So you can have people merely waiting and anticipating instead of people outright disappointed.

2. Short Time Frames, Means a Concentrated Marketing Blitz with little effort.

A big concept of the Directs, is that they are announced 1-3 days before it is officially aired. Many other companies detail announcements weeks or months before they happen. Not only that, but after they are announced Nintendo is always trending on social media. This basically drives all Nintendo fans to Era, causes Youtubers to drop what they are doing to make predictions, it causes thousands of retweets on Twitter. The pure unpredictability of it all, along with the short time frames practically drowns any other sort of gaming news. This throws out a huge curveball to other marketing, and it causes many outlets to wait with baited breath for the next Nintendo Direct so that they can be first to cover it.

3. You train your audience to wait and spend.

Didn’t get the game you wanted? Are you sad GTAV isn’t on the Switch? It’s okay poppy, you can wait for the next Direct. And then the next one. And then the next one.

These Nintendo Directs truly make an interesting case of trying and testing fans patience, and the simple fact that announcements happen so quickly, really gets people to open their wallets. Other companies usually detail games at least 6 months in advance, meaning that for every other publisher, I know what is coming. But for Nintendo? I may have money saved up for Smash, but Nintendo could announce a plethora of third party titles that I would “need to have”, allowing for impulse purchases. This short term announcements don’t give people time to save their money and think about it, but to spend right away.

The biggest thing though, is the reason why people are impulse spending because of Directs, is because they are waiting to see a certain game. Whether it is Smash, or Metroid, unannounced games like Animal Crossing, or 3rd party games. Everyone gathers there hoping for what they want, and usually end up buying something different. That waiting for that “one game” allows for huge impulse purchases due to the blitz marketing.


These Nintendo Directs, especially in Modern Nintendo, are actually a big reason why I think software sales are so high to Nintendo. So with the recent Software Numbers, and anticipation for the next Nintendo Direct, I wanted to kind of reflect on them. These Directs are extremely clever and manipulative marketing.... but man as a fan do I love them to death. They really serve so many purposes for PR and fan interaction, so it’s really interesting to see their effects.
