I think it's mostly correlation not causation. If you want to be famous, you're probably a self-absorbed asshole. Sure, the ego boost of becoming famous affects a lot of people negatively, but honestly I think that most of these people were assholes to start with.

Some people just want to do their craft as well as possible, and fame and public exposure is an unfortunate side effect. For most though, fame is the goal, and whatever they make is secondary. Fuck that.
