I think one thing that often gets overlooked regarding why people actually liked Batfleck, after the huge doubts like faced Keaton, is that he's the only one in the theatrical versions of Snyder's films (and most modern superhero movies save some mentioned like GOTG, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the first Iron Man) to have anything resembling an actual character arc for anybody! He's shattered and going through the motions of his unending brutal crusade of suffering to the point to where, as Alfred points out, he essentially chooses to attempt suicide by Superman.

Thankfully, their moms had the same first name though.

Kilmer was good too, but the production was too caught up in what toys they could get out of it, and it also got hacked to death and apparently Schumaker had to talk to all the leads through assistants or whatever:

Batman Forever went through a few major edits before its release. Originally darker than the final product, the movie's original length was closer to 2 hours and 40 minutes according to director Joel Schumacher.

There was an undercurrent theme involving Bruce having repressed memories of an aspect of his parents' death that he hadn't faced which was finding his father's diary on the night of his parents' wake and reading that Bruce insisted his parents go to the theater so he could watch one of the shows, meaning the reason he became Batman was out of the guilt that he was responsible for their deaths.

Colour me skeptical. Shockingly, all films would be masterpieces if only X didn't force Y to leave all good bits on the cutting floor / in the original script, according to Y. And I say that as someone who'll at least credit the two Schumacher films with some small nudges of appreciation (some of the sets are pretty good, in a grotesquely neon and bombastic reimagining of the Burton style through the TV series filter).

Batman & Robin is a total trainwreck but honestly I now find it more endearing for just how goofy it is.

Yeah and Schumacher has always been a total bullshitter about that type of thing, but iirc in recent years he actually finally admitted that B&R was a complete shit show and he had basically given up after the promises he got that were all broken by the studio on Forever so was just going through the motions for the paycheck, I saw a clip of some interview where he was laughing about Clooney's remark that he had played Batman/Bruce as gay and that he could totally see it. I want to say he apologizes for the movie at the end of the Directors Commentary they finally let him do on the one release.

But honestly that's an insult of a 12 year old because even though I loved the old Batman movies as a 12 year old they weren't the movies really exciting my imagination and making a mark on what I view as art.

But then I see the discussion these people have and the limited scope they have towards storytelling and well it all makes sense.

I assume you mean the Tim Burton ones.

As regular readers know, I contend Batman Returns is not only easily the best live-action Batman film, but I could consider elevating it up a notch as an overall movie until I remember Burton's goofy stuff pervades as much of it as his good stuff (like his portrayal of Gotham), especially early and then the unfortunate insertion of those rocket wearing penguins into the otherwise brilliant full circle of all the parts ending with Bruce, Selina and Christopher Walken.

Plus, it got its toys pulled from McDonald's after people complained about how dark the film was (may have been code for "Catwoman's outfit")...also why it did poorly at the box office supposedly. (Though I also contend that the first film is much darker than people seem to remember, Nicholsen's Joker is seriously a true monster and psychopath. Forever would be remembered differently too if Tommy Lee Jones didn't try to out-ham Jim Carrey, a person whose buffoonery he did NOT condone.)

Nolan's films are comparatively pathetic in characterization to the point of them being nearly absent. In Burton's films and Forever there's a consistent theme of how these are all seriously broken people. Perhaps especially Bruce.

Obligatory, because this is just fucking amazing, and Snyder should have found a way to rip it off somehow:

I think I last rewatched the three not long after Nolan's duology and side-story finished for comparison. I watched the second half of Returns when it was randomly on TV since then but that was at least pre-Trump.

As an additional aside, one thing I quite like about both the Burton films is that the comic adaptions come off near perfectly as Batman comics.

Nah, Bale's fine and the fight scenes aren't worth complaining about considering superhero films prior including Batman where Keaton has to move his entire body to turn, the Nolanverse films faults are the awful characters, the baffling dialogue, and the almost impressively incoherent plots/shots in which vital plot points occurring entirely off screen create a plot that is more like an endless series of convenient coincidences during which no one makes actual choices*. Not to mention 2/3rds of them are life-suckingly boring, increasingly so, to the point that Rises should immediately end after Bane breaks Bruce's back in the sewers.

To indicate my bias against the films, on another forum at the time I gave TDK a 3/5 in the thread on it, which rewarded me with a years worth of PMs from some random dude who found it a bit more favorable. When I gave TDKR a 2/5 later, he was more content to just call me a petty bitch and a troll in the thread. So people can change for the better. Just look at Bruce in the high quality Batman film**, Batman v Superman for example.

They already had a pretty good general idea of where bin Laden was after 9/11. The U.S. didn't covertly enter Afghanistan for two weeks after 9/11. And a significant U.S. ground presence happened well after Tora Bora, when bin Laden finally bailed out into Pakistan.

I mean, consider that Saddam somehow managed to hide for nine months with half a million coalition troops hanging around the place.
