Not taking a side on the whole “why does a WWII game have handicapped women soldiers” but it’s hard to deny that games that RE goes against seem to gain popularity (The Last Night, Kingdom Come) and games they support for diversity efforts seem to lose popularity (Mass Effect, BFV). I’m wondering if publishers see a trend.
I've not seen a single piece of marketing for this game after the reveal show. It's just bizarre.
Not sure what EA's marketing dept has been doing. Also they're handicapping themselves by not throwing in things about WW2 that people know or whatever.
Sure, some unnamed Resistance member fighting for the Fjords could be interesting and refreshing but people play WW2 games to gun down marching Nazi's and if possible Hitler himself or dress up as SS officers to shoot Americans or Commies.
Show us the Spitfire dogfights, the Tiger tanks barreling through Stalingrad and some U-Boat spy shit and I'm sure most WW2 shooter fans will jump back on board.
Remove all that and you're kinda left with a game that takes place during WW2 but has little to do with the conflict itself.
It's this narrative of "telling the untold stories" but in reality it feels more like budget cuts.
Overall, I think Soderlund saw the writing on the wall for Battlefield, EA's Star Wars license and especially Anthem.
It launches in February allegedly and they had like 3 minutes of a barely working Destiny clone with Jetpacks, sorry 'game' at E3.
Streaming platforms will be the next hill for a lot of these gaming companies to die on.
Because they won't be able to compete with Microsoft and Google on this front. Even though they think they can.
The only thing keeping EA afloat at this point are the sports games.
Maybe they should bring back Medal of Honor you know, as a mobile dating sim.
