I used to mock the rightwingers who insisted on arming themselves against the evil socialist gubment or against those evil gangs that were out to rape their wife, murder them and kill their children. (especially since many of them hailed from either suburban neighborhoods or rural areas that weren't exactly hotspots of gang activity) This thread kinda makes me wonder if maybe American left-wingers aren't that much different and have that same urge to arm themselves when terrified by sociopolitical phenomena, whether the sources of their anxiety can be removed by shooting at them or not.

I'm hearing several arguments for why people should suddenly be arming themselves:
- There's a fascist in the Oval Office. Yes there is. But you buying yourself some boomsticks won't be what'll be removing him from that place. If he's removed, it'll either be because Democrats take over congress and Mueller finds stuff on him that makes him so toxic the GOP has no choice but go along with an impeachment process or it'll be because 2020 rolls around and an electoral majority is so tired of his non-stop BS that they vote his ass out of office. Neither of these scenarios is dependent on you owning a firearm.

- Nazi's are marching in the Streets. Yes they are. Well, they did that last time, faced a huge backlash, got doxed out of their jobs and when they marched again a few months ago there were like 50 of them and thousands of people who were against everything they stood for. Those counterprotestors didn't need firearms to make the nazi's feel terrified.

- We need to mass-arm PoC in order to encourage meaningful gun control. That sounds like the same accelerist argument I've heard in 2016: "we need to elect Trump because the Democrats suck and this is the only way to get them engaged". Well, that certainly happened, but anybody feeling good about the massive amount of collateral? Some of that collateral will be wearing black togas for the next few decades, btw. Maybe a heavily armed minority population would scare the GOP into supporting gun control, but when gun ownership goes up, firearm deaths also go up and would likely stay up because very few new gun regulation will get rid of guns that are already out there.

- There's police brutality. Yes, there is. But at the same time, if a society ever gets to a point where cops back down from confronting someone they're leery of just because he's armed, they've reached the point where there's no purpose in having cops to begin with. If you fear police brutality and you think carrying will protect you, guess again. They'll just call some reinforcements first, as is their job. Mass armament isn't gonna make the cops less twitchy. If you want to take on police brutality, you're better off getting politically engaged so scumm like Arpaio and David Clark isn't voted into the sheriff's office and engage candidates for the office on the subject before and after the election.

What you're better off thinking about is whether there's some non-abstract threat in your everyday life these days that can't be migated by not entering dark alleyways at night and keeping your door locked after dark. And if there's concrete evidence that owning firearms would actually makes you safer if you took all Hollywood rules out of the equation. I mean, sure, guns make you FEEL safer. That's their primary purpose and that's why gun manufacturers love fear as a marketting tool. They don't necessarily make you safer though. They come with their own risks that don't disappear by following a safety course.

Of all the gun deaths in the US, gun deaths caused by some random nazi goosestepping into your home, doing the Ingraham salute and then opening fire are still pretty low, even with Trump in the White House. Most murders aren't random, but committed by people close to the victim. Most firearm deaths are suicides.

For every single gun owner who saves his own life by killing a nazi/MS13 member (take your pick) waltzing into their home in self defense, 20 gun owners commit suicide during a moment of weakness, 10 gun owners die or lose someone because some domestic dispute escalated beyond what it should have and 5 of them lose a child because they accidentally blow their own or their sibling's head off. Those incidents aren't as spectacular as the nazi-invasion type of news, so you don't hear much about them, but they're a lot more common.

And just because someone passes a background/psychological check NOW doesn't mean the gun won't still be there when those situations change. I grew up in a normal, stable everyday household where both my parents would have easily passed whatever check was imposed and the same would be true for my siblings if they were old enough. My family nevertheless got caught up in a messy divorce that stretched for over 4 years and especially left its mark on one of my siblings. Things slowly settled down eventually, but I'm still grateful we never had a firearm in the home during those more turbulent times, begging to turn brief temporary moments of weakness into permanent tragedies because holy shit, were there many moments of weakness back then.

Of course, as a non-American who's usually as puzzled by American gun culture as the average non-American, don't mind me.

It was my understanding that a good portion of our backing of Israel, other than partisan religious reasons, was because they are an ally in the proxy regional standoff with Russia. Hence why the left also backs them. (Discounting other historical explanations people use). Though it seems their own politics are shifting even harder conservative (in a world that seems to be suspiciously shifting conservative from Russian influence).
