"But I like him!" isn't a great argument against the article. I liked him as well, one of the most likeable characters in the cast. But there's more to a character than whether or not we like him.

That would be fair criticism if the article was not vitriolic and biggest criticism outside voice actor bitching with “backstories that i don’t like are racist and fuck water buffaloes”.

If I need to guess, Rockstar probably did try to get a black/Indian actor for the rol given the other characters.

I feel like I just read an op-ed in a high school newspaper. Lots of righteous indignation, not a lot of solid argumentation. I fully agree a Native actor should have voiced Charles, but not much else.

Charles was the best side character and could easily have had a game of his own (and perhaps should have). We live next to a reservation, and my wife works at the reservation clinic. We interact with a lot of the native population on a daily or weekly basis. Honestly, I think most folks I've met would love Charles, Rains Fall, and Eagle Flies. Are the characters very extremely Native? Yeah. So are most of the Natives I know. They are extremely traditional, and their identity can't be separated from their treatment by whites. If Charles sucks, then the Natives I know suck, too.

(Likely the largest issue with Charles people around here would have is that he's half-black. Tradition tends to butt heads with progressive ideals, even in minority groups.)

Additionally, this paradigm of accusing anyone of not being sufficiently woke of violence won't lead anywhere good.

I'm Nadleh Whut'en and Métis, if someone were to adapt my life story (the thrilling adventures of an indigenous educator) I wouldn't expect the person cast to belong to the same nations I do. But I would be furious if someone British were cast, even though I'm white-passing.

Indigenous artists aren't some mythical creator like people are making it out in this thread. You put out a casting call, you'll get results.

I gotta vote for EA. It has been a sort of 'under the radar' thing because no one cares much about EA but...

And this is just scratching the surface of things that went wrong, I recall them shipping a game and then recalling it.

The only thing that kept them afloat this generation was EA sports. They bungled everything else and it wasn't even that they milked their franchises too much or got too greedy this time around.
They basically flushed $500 - $750 million and 5 years of game development down the drain with nothing to show for it. It's astonishing.
I wonder how they cooked their books and when that will come out.

The only reason I would doubt you on that is because gaming is notoriously bad at portraying minorities, not because you didn't follow up on it.

If someone said "Playing Overwatch at a professional level is very difficult, but the OWL has a racism problem," and then the rest of the article is about the racism problem, I'm not going to chastise them for not following up on explaining how playing Overwatch professionally is time-consuming.

Certain statements, like "this minority character in a game is racist" already have the benefit of assumption. And again, the comment isn't even dangling. She lists some stereotypes that don't agree with her, of which you can understand why she'd call the character racist even if you like the character.
