Slave trade was illegal in most of Europe, especially the Catholic parts, after Pope Paul III banned all slavery in 1537 (enslaving Christians was already banned long before that). From Sublimus Dei:

Okay fine, he is innocent until proven guilty. It seems extremely unlikely at this stage that he is innocent, but hey, crazy things happen. What gets me though is how definitively guilty the person with the wrong opinions is with even the most vague accusations. Yet here they are completely unwilling to give this one up. And this despite it seeming to be a lost cause.

Edit: It is actually a more reasonable opinion than I thought. It was just too long a post to glance through. It seems to be more of an attack on outrage culture than anything else.
