Your argument would hold water if it wasnt because:


1) Sophitia was created years ago in an era before Japanese otaku cared about this shit like they do now. Before moe blobs and waifus were a thing. It was such an entirely different situation that led Namco to think they could make their postergirl a wife and a mother, something thats unthinkable for a mdern JP fighting game!


2) they eventually did ditch Sophitia once she got too old due to a time skip and got replaced by her virginal body doubl-- I mean daughter in SC5. We never see her on screen because she must be like 40 now and we cant have that on a Japanese fighting game!


and


3) they rebooted the entire franchise and went back to square one with SC6 and they undid Sophitia's marriage and motherhood and is now back to being an early 20 something hot as hell virginal girl.


So no, Sophitia is not a good example.

For the record, I totally agree that it should be up to console manufacturers, and ratings boards, to decide what is and isn't appropriate to have in a game. I also personally wish publishers had taken a similar stance with books in the past, so that we could have cleaned up stuff like Nabokov's Lolita, and Stephen King's It. As soon as a story involves characters under the age of 15(18? 20? Depends on the country I guess), they should never be shown in a way that could be seen as sexualizing, no matter how "integral" to the story and themes it may or may not be. Nude children should not be allowed in the public space. The integrity of the story should always be secondary to moral concerns, at least when it comes to children. Problematic storeis just shouldn't be published, IMO.

It's a real shame that pushes for banning this content in Japan fell through because manga artists cried about freedom of expression. I hope the topic gets brought up again and this stuff is actually made illegal.
Cultivation theory is a thing. A lot of this stuff is inseparable from anime and considering a lot of people get into anime from a young age so it's normalized for them as they grow up. This leads to people getting outraged over "muh censorship" because to them this content really isn't a big deal.
But that's the problem. It is a big deal and a lot of people don't realise it.

Is to bad that the push that banning this content only made owning actual CP ilegal in Japan.

But maybe it's just me, but there seems to be plenty of female games this gen and last. And multiplayer games seem to give equal attention and representation to the female characters. Sure there's plenty to progress and improve on, but I don't think it's actually that bad.
