Yeah, the gameplay is jank. This was rushed completely out the door to try to prevent the death rattle of Boss Key. I can't really recommend this.

It barely passed Lawbreakers all-time. Now it's like 5,000 players currently playing. One popular PUBG streamer with like 3,000 viewers on Twitch, others with like 100-200 and then a bunch of 2-5 streams.

It's gonna die out within the month if not sooner once the PUBG popular streamers aren't paid to play it anymore.

Watched part of Jim Sterling's critique of the trailer and the main thing he focused on was BossKey copying the latest fad when they see it rising in popularity. Thing is, Fortnite also did exactly that, and was coming off the back of a unsuccessful title. There was some skeptical feedback at the time (I didn't honestly think it could surpass PUBG that's for sure) but once it proved popular it was then praised as a successful pivot.

So idk. I think it's better to judge this game on what it is (which appears to be a janky test project) than mostly coming at it for jumping on the genre bandwagon.

And to that point, I gave it another chance last night and under all the super super rough edges I think there's probably an ok game. The shooting is really snappy and the hit detection is arguably better than PUBG.

Exactly this. Jumping on the BR train is fine and all (despite how desperate it is), but it's REALLY rough around the edges. It screams that Boss Key really needs people to be whaling this for them to be open still. Which makes the question: "Why would I invest in this given how fast Lawbreakers died and how fast Nexon dropped support for that?"

Fortnite, like Paladins captures the BR freemium market, and you can play PUBG for free on mobile. So it's really hard to justify this release. Especially in the state it's in.

Cliffy B is pretty wealthy (for the game industry, especially people in his "role" on most titles) on his own due to his starting at/with Epic at like 17, the fact that they're based in NC, Gears, etc. And by most accounts many of the Epic guys are pretty conservative financially and so did not do an id flame out with their money. He indicated that Boss Key was going to be him spending some of it on vanity projects that he hoped would make money but it was okay if there were flops.

Cliffy B mostly seems to strike me as level headed and not taking things personally most of the time, but then again that's mostly from him reacting to GAF over the years.

He's taking the twitter teasing pretty well this time though maybe because it's not his game

although there is the irony that iirc he finally left Epic in part because he disagreed with their long-term models for UT and Fortnite only to now seemingly adopt the same model of games as an evolving platform that allowed Epic to transform Fortnite so quickly and successfully... in part because Lawbreakers sorta proved the internal Epic debate (which was especially about UT iirc) he lost

I mean, if they want feedback, they could simply ask for suggestions. Putting an unfinished map in the game (you literally clip through the floor and bushes are inside) out there for the public with "yo, have at it!" isn't going to make a good first impression.

Last I checked, past the weekend, it was holding 5,000. It wasn't hitting the 12,000 or so that it had as an all-time. But checking into Sunday, it was keeping 5,000-6,000 players which isn't BAD but not lighting a fuse successful.

I just checked, and it's 2,000 right now. So I guess you're right in that it's bleeding players just like Lawbreakers, but much more slowly.

I mean he has (or had?) "fuck you" money from investing his Epic money into Occulus. So surely he can pay them. But the problem is: The brand/development house is known as the "Lawbreakers studio" and since that was a laughing stock, it's hard on morale to stay with a company that doesn't seem to be finding massive success that Cliffy wants them to do ("Million Dollar I.P.").

I tried to install it earlier because I love Steam F2P everything but especially disasters and it crashed Steam when I clicked "next" so instead I played ALLIANCE OF VALIANT ARMS in "protest" because you can get a TF2 knife from playing one match.

And that game is pretty awesome at being just terrible, and the UI, oh god it's a disaster area. Especially figuring out, well, actually, literally everything pretty much. I had a bit too much fun playing the one mindless mode where you just gun down everyone because the map is like two hallways. And it adds like 20 bots to the game who are just cannon fodder. So it was worth it. To get that TF2 knife I guess? Also you get an achievement for creating a character, which is required to get past the first menu.
