brb writing a think piece about England's defeat and how it's a metaphor or something for Brexit

Brexit has been a shitshow from the beginning though. England at least played better for the first 60 minutes.

I don't know what happened in the second half. England had complete control the entire first 45 minutes and then completely lost it.
They ate a goal and lost all faith.

I gotta give England it's due, never thought they'd amount to anything but they made it regardless of an easier route or not.

Then again, England lucking into an easier route, reaching the semi-finals, and then blowing a 1-0 lead is the most England thing I've ever seen.

But still, that wasn't one of these England teams that had incredible individual talent and ended up choking. That was a great run for a middle of the pack team talent wise.

I mean sure (though Colombia isn't a bunch of pushovers) but you only play the table you get. I mean in theory Sweden "should have" been Germany. Switzerland "could have" been Serbia.

Oh I agree. Just saying they definitely over-performed. It makes it extra hilarious that their Cinderella story was ended by one people actually want to see.

Not that Croatia was middle of the pack. I find many people vastly underestimated them but I wouldn't have thought they'd make it this far either.

I wanted to see the Cinderalla story of one of the least talented English sides winning it all :goty2

Croatia always had some great individual players but always managed to underperform(1998 being the exception of course).
Gambling aside, I would have been happy for both teams if they advanced. But Croatia certainly deserved it, they were the better team for 75 minutes today.

And for the Croatian team to look fresher after back to back overtime games and after a long season was amazing as well.

Third place game is completely useless, though. Nobody wants to be there. Players would rather be at home. It's just a lazy TV money grab.
The Euros did the right thing when they abolished it in 1980.

Tough way to lose for sure, but you can be proud of the team. They left it all on the field and could have won if they converted their chances in the first half.
They just couldn't deal with the adjustments Croatia made at half time.

Footsie casual-at-best opinion:

It feels like half the Croatian passes landed right in front of a Brit. The fuck.

That said, what a change. Fist half, completely and utterly dominated by the Brits. Croats stumbling about as if they were one man down and in mourning. Second half, Brits still kinda strong but faltering until around the time where they ate that goal, and from then they seem to have lost their drive and cohesion entirely. Felt like an entirely different team at times. Rest of the game was Brits struggling weakly against an increasingly visibly exhausted bunch of Croatian players that. just. wouldn't. back. down. What a fight.

...they stand no chance against the French though. They're completely drained. Part of why they struggled so much in the beginning, I'd wager.

LOL at the refs though. I thought the video assist ref was supposed to help. Instead it feels like they gave yellows for the weirdest shit and brazenly overlooked some really annoying situations.

And, oh boy, can't wait for the bum fight between EU and UK. Neither Belgium nor Britain will be overly excited to fight over third place, I guess, but it'll be great fodder for the Brexit issue regardless of actual outcome.

No wonder these motherfuckers are playing like their lives depend on it.

Modric is going to trail for perjury after the world cup and so are some of his other teammates.

They need to win to get the public on their side to avoid potential jail time  :lol

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-44801849

Quote
Prosecutors say the Real Madrid midfielder gave false testimony during the trial of one of the most powerful figures in Croatian football, the former head of Dinamo Zagreb, Zdravko Mamic, in a multi-million-euro corruption case. Mamic, who was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, is currently in hiding in Bosnia. Modric's perjury trial will begin after the World Cup.

Quote
On 6 June 2018, Mamić was sentenced on first instance to six and a half years prison for transfer fraud relating to Luka Modrić and Dejan Lovren's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur and Olympique Lyonnais respectively.[15] Mamić, his brother Zoran, former Dinamo director Damir Vrbanović and tax official Milan Pernar, were all found guilty of siphoning over €15m from Dinamo and defrauding the state budget over €1.2m in unpaid taxes. Mamić, who had crossed the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina one day earlier, did not attend the sentencing and stated that he would not be returning to Croatia.[16]

Why the fuck are are you putting "easier" in quotations, no amount of fixing could have produced this probabilistic anomaly of a gift.... shit is like a black swan event. I mean to be fair they were exciting to watch at least and had alot of pace as opposed to some recent england versions.

Edit: not sure if previous post was starcastic or an attempt to mend headwalk's very broken and vulnerable heart.

Speaking of which....

I'm reading that book Red Card about the world cup going to russia and all the fraud behind it... there's some interesting bits in there about conspiracy theories and honestly some of that shit is adding up.

For example Ronaldo's weird convulsion episode prior to the 98 final. The theory was at the time, that they threw the game for millions of dollars, much more than what they would have gotten for the win, and that it also guaranteed brazil getting the world cup... 5 years later they got the world cup.

And then apparently there was one involving Spain backing out from bidding on the world cup and voting for Russia instead for possible referee bribes for better calls in 2010 (which they got). This one came from the former MI6 Trump dossier guy.

I never believed in mass conspiracies involving major sporting events but after that whole doping scandal and everything else i'm honestly skeptical these days. And Fifa is shady as fuck

The only thing I believe is that doping in football is far more rampant than everybody believes. There is too much momey to be made and the testing process is so easy to circumvent.

When I played I knew there were dudes taking all kinds of stuff to get an edge and that was years ago in the 4th division.

Match fixing though? Nah I don't think so at least not at this scale, there are too many people involved and someone will always talk.
See the Juventus scandal.
